A process for making filament yarn products is disclosed in which polypropylene, having a molecular weight distribution of less than about 7 and a melt index between about 20 and about 60 is melt spun to produce an as-spun product or additionally interlaced before take-up, twist-drawn, heat set, draw-textured by false-twisting, simultaneously draw-textured, sequentially draw-textured, draw-twisted, draw-Taslan textured, stuffer box crimped and cut into staple fibers, or a plurality of yarns are simultaneously draw-textured by false-twisting while reversing the direction of twist of alternate yarns and thereafter interlacing. Products of improved tenacity, improved birefringence and low elongation are produced.

Polyolefin products and methods of making

A plurality of yarns are drawn from supply sources onto feed rolls and over a set of draw rolls in adjacent relationship. The yarns are urged into a desired contiguous relationship on the draw rolls by a concave guide surface in the course of passing from the yarn feed rolls to the draw rolls.

Apparatus for drawing yarn

In accordance with the present invention, novel lustrous, filamentary polypropylene products are produced by melt spinning a polypropylene resin, having a molecular weight distribution of less than about 7 and a melt flow between about 20 and about 60, at a spinning temperature below about 510.degree. F. and taking up the spun filaments at a speed above about 1200 meters per minute. A novel product having a high degree of luster is also produced in accordance with the present invention.

Method for drawing yarn

A process is disclosed for producing a continuous multifilament yarn of melt-spinnable, polymeric material which is essentially free from stretch and which comprises draw-texturing a first continuous filament yarn end, combining the first end with a second flat continuous filament yarn end, and feeding the combined textured and flat ends through a jet interlacer in an overfeed condition with the textured end being fed at a greater rate of overfeed than that of the flat end. An alternate process is disclosed wherein draw-texturing of the first textured yarn end and drawing of the second flat yarn end are performed simultaneously prior to jet interlacing of the overfed combined ends. Also disclosed is the spun-like continuous multifilament yarn produced by the novel process as well as resulting fabric made from the yarn.

A yarn is twist-drawn on an apparatus employing a 2-for-1 twist spindle; at least one guide roll positioned above the spindle; means suitable for receiving a yarn from said guide roll and drawing the yarn; and means suitable for winding the drawn yarn, wherein the guide roll comprises a cylindrical surface mounted on a shaft which is attached to a base suitable for positioning the cylindrical surface so that the yarn rides on the surface of the roll in a relatively fixed position and a substantial amount of twist is not trapped in the yarn ahead of the guide roll.

Apparatus and process suitable for twist-drawing a yarn

A yarn is twisted by passing the yarn wound on a package to a tensioning zone and then passing the yarn to a 2-for-1 twist spindle and twisting the yarn. The tension applied to the yarn in the tensioning zone is the result of the sinusoidal path of the yarn through the tension zone and is a function of the amplitude of the yarn passing through the sinusoidal path.

Apparatus and process suitable for twisting a yarn

Yarn in the form of a yarn wad is passed to a cooling and restraining zone wherein the surfaces of a plurality of balls are pressed directly against the surface of the yarn wad and simultaneously the movement of the balls relative to the yarn wad is restricted so that the balls are prevented from entering the yarn wad and the yarn wad is restrained due to the action of the balls upon the yarn wad. In addition, apparatus is provided useful in the method of the invention.

Method and apparatus for restraining a yarn wad

In processing thermoplastic yarn a value is monitored to determine whether said value is above or below a predetermined value. The monitored value is related to the denier of the yarn and associated with a yarn plug. The interval for the monitored value associated with said yarn plug to oscillate with respect to said predetermined value is timed and the yarn is processed in response thereto.

Method and apparatus for processing thermoplastic yarn

Yarn is passed to a texturing zone wherein a yarn wad is formed, and the yarn wad is then passed through a flexible sleeve in a restraining zone wherein the yarn wad is restrained by a plurality of individual stacked members. In addition an apparatus is provided useful in the method of the invention.
