A fluid sensor for heat exchanger system includes a supporting device such as a tubular hose fitting for mounting the sensor in the system so that heat exchanging fluid circulated in the system comes into contact with the sensor. A window or sight glass is mounted in the supporting device along with corrodible separating means interposed between the sight glass and the heat exchanging fluid. A visual indicator such as a movable flap or a colored ball can be viewed through the sight glass when the separating means is ruptured or broken by corrosion. The viewing of the indicator provides an indication that the heat exchanging fluid has reached a certain corrosive state and requires replacement or treatment. In a preferred embodiment, the separating means is a metal diaphragm spaced from the sight glass. The diaphragm can be made of one corrodible metal while a ring in which the diaphragm is mounted can be made from a different nobler metal so that the diaphragm and ring form an anode and a cathode of a galvanic couple.

Coolant corrosiveness indicator

A plate and fin type heat exchanger is disclosed for cooling automotive engine oil, transmission fluid and power steering fluid. The heat exchanger is formed of a plurality of stacked plate pairs with louvered fins located therebetween. The plate pairs are formed of two elongate identical plates located face-to-face and having planar central portions, raised co-planar peripheral edge portions joined together, and co-planar end bosses with openings therein to form flow headers when the plate pairs are stacked together. The planar central portions have a plurality of uniformly spaced-apart, on-overlapping blunt projections joined together along a common plane with the peripheral edge portions. The projections are symmetrical and provide uniform flow through the plate pairs.

Fittings for the mounting of a radiator to the metalwork of an automotive vehicle, or for mounting attachments such as fan shrouds or cooling fans, are suitably positioned within the core of the radiator and attached in position during the bonding cycle for the radiator assembly or adhesively joined to the radiator core after the bonding cycle.

A clamping device on heat exchangers that will mechanically force mating parts together to prevent fluid leakage. The clamping device comprises one or more mechanically formed clips or clamps sprung around the rims of mating parts with sufficient force to prevent the faying surfaces from separating during normal use. Gaskets or sealing compounds may be present between the surfaces.

Retaining clips for gasketed tanks on heat exchangers

A two fluid heat exchanger adapted for utilization in an exhaust gas recirculation system of an automotive internal combustion engine to reduce the temperature level of the exhaust gas from the combustion cycle that is metered from the exhaust manifold and recycled through the combustion cycle. The heat exchanger has a generally flat configuration with a first pair of flanged dished plates forming an inner chamber and a second pair of flanged dished plates encompassing the first pair of plates to form a fluid envelope around the inner chamber. The flanges of the pairs of plates are joined together with a spacing between the walls of the pairs of plates at the opposite ends with the inner flanges having openings therethrough to communicate between the upper and lower portions of the envelope. The upper plate of the second pair has an inlet opening and an outlet opening for one fluid and a central indentation between the openings to provide a flow pattern around the inner chamber, and a second fluid inlet and outlet communicate with the inner chamber.
