According to various embodiments, a power converter circuit is disclosed. The power converter circuit includes at least two vertically stacked printed circuit boards (PCBs) comprising a top PCB and a bottom PCB. The power converter circuit further includes at least one multiphase coupled inductor placed between the top PCB and the bottom PCB. The top PCB is coupled to the bottom PCB via at least one conductive winding of the multiphase coupled inductor. The power converter circuit further includes at least one circuit module placed above the top PCB and at least one power source placed below the bottom PCB. The multiphase coupled inductor is configured to deliver current vertically from the bottom PCB to the top PCB.

System and method for vertical power delivery to electronic systems

In an embodiment, the present disclosure pertains to a method of making a composite. In some embodiments, the method includes applying an external magnetic field to a mixture composed of a plurality of magnetic materials in a container, in which the external magnetic field produces a homogenous and uniform magnetic flux in the container. In some embodiments, the method further includes solidifying the mixture to result in the growth of solvent crystals in the mixture, and subliming a solvent phase of the mixture in the container to thereby form a composite having uniformly aligned magnetic materials. In an additional embodiment, the present disclosure pertains to a composite having uniformly aligned magnetic materials. In some embodiments, a majority of the magnetic materials in the composite are aligned in the same direction.

Freeze-cast magnetic flake composites

A resonant coil with integrated capacitance includes at least one separation dielectric layer and a plurality of conductor layers stacked in an alternating manner. Each of the plurality of conductor layers includes a first conductor sublayer and second conductor sublayer having common orientation and a sublayer dielectric layer separating the first and second conductor sublayers. Adjacent conductor layers of the plurality of conductor layers have different orientations.

Resonant coils with integrated capacitance

A resonant coil with integrated capacitance includes at least one separation dielectric layer and a plurality of conductor layers stacked in an alternating manner. Each of the plurality of conductor layers includes a first conductor sublayer and second conductor sublayer having common orientation and a sublayer dielectric layer separating the first and second conductor sublayers, each conductor layer having multiple discontinuities.

A multilayer conductor includes at least one separation dielectric layer and a plurality of conductor layers stacked in an alternating manner. Each of the plurality of conductor layers includes a first conductor sublayer and a second conductor sublayer separated from the first conductor sublayer by a sublayer dielectric layer. The second conductor sublayer at least partially overlaps with the first conductor sublayer in each of the plurality of conductor layers. Multilayer conductors with integrated capacitors and associated systems and methods

High power output may be obtained from a photovoltaic (PV) system by controlling each photovoltaic cell of a solar array individually to operate at its maximum power point. Each cell may have associated power electronics and control circuitry that may be integrated together on a chip which may be advantageously implemented in CMOS, enabling reductions in cost and size. A perturb and observe algorithm may be used to find the maximum power point by measuring the power produced at different operating points, and modifying the operating point in the direction of increased power production. In one aspect, performance of a perturb and observe algorithm may be improved in the presence of noise.

Power processing methods and apparatus for photovoltaic systems

A method of forming a radially anisotropic toroidal magnetic core includes providing apparatus having a first magnet for providing a radial magnetic field extending across a cavity from an axial spindle to a surrounding second magnetic element, placing a substrate in the cavity, the substrate having a hole fitting around the head of the spindle; and sputter-depositing a film of ferromagnetic material onto the substrate. In an embodiment, the spindle is magnetically coupled to a first pole of the first magnet, the second magnetic element is coupled to a second pole of the first magnet, and a thermally conductive, nonmagnetic, insert separates the spindle and the second magnetic element.

Methods for making radially anisotropic thin-film magnetic torroidal cores

An M phase coupled inductor includes a magnetic core including a first end magnetic element, a second end magnetic element, and M legs disposed between and connecting the first and second end magnetic elements. M is an integer greater than one. The coupled inductor further includes M windings, where each winding has a substantially rectangular cross section. Each one of the M windings is at least partially wound about a respective leg.

Method for making magnetic components with M-phase coupling, and related inductor structures

Cost efficient, lightweight and rapid windshield deicing systems and methods are disclosed. The systems utilize step-up converters or inverters, or dual-voltage batteries, to provide a voltage high enough to deice a windshield in less than thirty seconds at ambient temperatures above &#x2212;10 C. Some of the disclosed systems include sensors for deicing element and ambient temperatures, and in some embodiments windspeed. All embodiments have a controller for limiting deicing time to that sufficient to melt a boundary layer of ice. The controller of embodiments with sensors computes deicing time as a function of ambient temperature. Embodiments interact with wiper systems to enable wipers to clear ice once the boundary layer is melted.

Systems and methods for windshield deicing

Methods and structures for constructing a magnetic core of a coupled inductor. The method provides for constructing N-phase coupled inductors as both single and scalable magnetic structures, where N is an integer greater than 1. The method additionally describes how such a construction of the magnetic core may enhance the benefits of using the scalable N-phase coupled inductor. The first and second magnetic cores may be formed into shapes that, when coupled together, may form a single scalable magnetic core. For example, the cores can be fashioned into shapes such as a U, an I, an H, a ring, a rectangle, and a comb, that cooperatively form the single magnetic core.
