A process operates a piston engine in which at least one intake valve and at least one exhaust valve are assigned to each of the cylinders of the piston engine. The piston engine is equipped with a valve actuator permitting variable opening and closing times. An engine control system of the piston engine determines a current actual value of an exhaust gas mass proportion. The value forms the contents of the cylinders together with a fresh gas mass proportion after the fresh gas has been supplied and before combustion. The engine control system actuates the valve actuator in order to set a desired value for the exhaust gas mass proportion.

In a method for operating an internal combustion engine, as a function of a desired load, wherein a desired pressure in the intake pipe of the internal combustion engine is determined and set by means of an air supply device, the ignition timing, the beginning of fuel injection and the duration of fuel injection values are determined in accordance with a predetermined relationship as a function of the desired load and the values are supplied as actuating signals to actuating elements by which the ignition and the fuel injection are adjusted to improve the engine response behavior.

Method of operating an internal combustion engine

In a method of operating an internal combustion engine which has at least two cylinder banks that can be controlled separately as a function of a desired load, wherein a desired pressure in the intake pipe of the internal combustion engine is determined and set by means of an air supply device for supplying combustion air to the cylinders of the internal combustion engine, at least one engine-related characteristic value which affects the behavior of the internal combustion engine is determined for each cylinder bank, and, in the event of a difference between the characteristic values of the cylinder banks, at least one cylinder bank is manipulated in such a way that the average value of the considered characteristic quantity corresponds to a desired average value in order to reduce the thermodynamic and mechanical loading of the internal combustion engine with bank-selective operating mode.

A method for adjusting an internal combustion engine with variable valve timing wherein the current position of the accelerator pedal is associated with a set air mass and a set pressure. The set pressure is compared with a reference pressure and control of the set air mass takes place via the throttling device in the intake pipe when the pressure falls below the reference pressure, and control of the set air mass is carried out via the engine valves when the pressure exceeds the reference pressure.

Method and apparatus for adjusting an internal combustion engine with variable valve timing

In a motor control method and apparatus for an internal combustion engine, a point for the beginning of injection moment and injection period for each cylinder are determined in a load-controlled way in a motor controller and supplied to the actuators for execution of the injection. To improve the response characteristic of the internal combustion engine, control information for injection of the cylinder currently to be addressed is transmitted as reserve information for the subsequent cylinder in every transmission cycle. In the event of a load increase, reserve information from the previous transmission cycle is used to control injection in the subsequent cylinder.

Motor control method and apparatus for internal combustion engine

An electronic engine control system for an internal-combustion engine has a computer with programs stored therein and interacts with a sensor system to determine a residual gas fraction in a combustion space of the engine. The engine control system generates a signal value, which correlates with the current residual gas fraction, from a signal value which is generated by the engine control system and which correlates with a current air/fuel mass ratio of a carbureted fuel fed to the combustion space, and from a signal value which is sensed by the sensor system and which correlates with a current air/fuel mass ratio of an exhaust gas discharged from the combustion space after the combustion.

Electronic engine control system

A direct-injection Otto cycle internal-combustion engines can be operated in the stratified charge mode with a later fuel injection during the compression cycle and a lean mixture formation and, with an operating mode with a homogeneous mixture formation, by fuel injection during the intake cycle which is provided for higher load ranges of the internal-combustion engine. The exhaust gases of the internal-combustion engine are decontaminated by an NO,storage catalyst which must be periodically regenerated during a homogeneous mixture formation and at rich fuel/air ratios (&lgr;). To permit a fast change of the operating mode and particularly the regeneration of the storage catalyst without changing the running performance of the internal-combustion engine, the fuel quantity to be injected per power cycle, is apportioned during a homogeneous operating phase during the change of operating modes, corresponding to the actual intake air flow rate by adjusting the respective injection time. Isochronously and proportionally to the change of the injection time, the ignition point in time is adjusted in the direction of a late ignition. The homogeneous operating phase is limited by a change-over point in time at which the injection end of the fuel injection is shifted into the power cycle provided for the demanded operating mode.
