The present disclosure relates to a preparation of polymer with improved color and properties. More particularly, the disclosure relates to the preparation of polyamide by introducing a polyetheramine additive during the polymer extrusion step. The extruded polymer is superior in appearance and spinnable in subsequent processing into yarn.

Polymer preparation

Disclosed is a process for making a polyetheramine containing polyamide without excessive foaming in successive batches by providing a controlled heat input rate step for those batch runs that incorporate polyetheramine containing polyamide heel from previous runs.

Amorphous high performance polyamide

An apparel textile yarn includes a polyamide. The polyamide includes a nylon and a polyetheramine. The polyetheramine has a molecular weight of at least 1500 and an Amine Hydrogen Equivalent Weight (AHEW) of less than 10 percent higher than the idealized AHEW for the polyetheramine. The polyamide may have a moisture regain ranging from about 10% to about 30%.

A process for making a polyamide polymer, said process comprising heating, in one or more ionic liquid(s), one or more polyamide precursor(s) selected from: (i) one or more free dicarboxylic acid(s) or ester(s) thereof, with one or more diamine(s); or (ii) one or more salt(s) of a dicarboxylic acid with a diamine; or (iii) one or more lactam(s); or (iv) mixtures of any of the foregoing precursors (i) to (iii).

Preparation of polyamides

The disclosures herein relate to a polymer such as nylon 66, having low yellowness and excellent whiteness retention for applications in melt extrusion and injection molding where an increase in molecular weight is not desirable. The polymer is prepared with a phosphorus compound content, e.g., a sodium hypophosphite (SHP) content, in an amount of 150 to 300 ppm by weight. The presence of an 'end cap' additive such as one selected from acetic acid, propionic acid, benzoic acid, or succinic acid, added at the start of polymerization, effectively mitigates undesired molecular weight gain.
