A device for emission of polarized light and its detection including a light emitter configured to generate an outgoing light beam directed along an optical emission axis, a light receiver configured to detect an incoming light beam directed along an optical detection axis, and a polarization unit positioned in the optical emission axis and optical detection axis and configured to polarize the outgoing light beam and the incoming light beam. To allow a compact assembly, the device, by reducing the number of its constituent parts and by providing a good detection reliability of the device, the optical emission axis and the optical detection axis are angled with respect to one another such that they include an intersection point and the polarization unit includes a polarizer configured to deflect light from at least one of the incoming light beam towards the optical detection axis and the outgoing light beam away from the optical emission axis, the deflected light being defined by a polarization state produced by the polarizer.

An optical sensor system comprises one or more optical sensor devices, a master device and an electrical bus connecting the sensor devices to the master device. The bus comprises a signal daisy chain for the transmission of synchronization events. The sensor devices are adapted to detect a synchronization event at a signal input terminal, to time an optical activity based on this synchronization event and to provide at a signal output terminal a synchronization event delayed by an offset time with respect to the detected synchronization event. A property of the synchronization events provided by the sensor devices is indicative of an output value of the respective sensor device, corresponding to a state of an optical section to which the sensor is sensitive. Diodes are connected between the signal output terminals of the sensor devices and a signal line of the bus, which is connected to a signal input terminal of the master device, so that the latter receives the synchronization events from the sensor devices. The master device comprises means for extracting the output values of the sensor devices from these synchronization events. A sensor device for such a system comprises an enclosure of cuboid outer shape adapted to be mounted to a mounting rail so that the longitudinal direction of the rail is perpendicular to lateral sides of the enclosure. An electrical connector with the signal input and output terminals and with power supply terminals is arranged at a side connecting the lateral sides of the enclosure. Bus segments are provided for connecting the sensor devices to the system bus.

The gear unit for use with a manually adjustable electric component has a manually operable adjusting shaft and a reduction gear including a rotatable ball cage and a plurality of balls as well as a race ring element having a spring and retaining portion that encircles the race ring externally. Such a gear unit allows greatly reduced dimensions and furthermore offers a considerable dielectric strength.

The invention relates to an inductive proximity sensor for embedding in a mild steel mounting plate, comprising an enclosure with a front wall of synthetic material forming a sensing face at a front end of the enclosure, an oscillator comprising a sensor coil with a core made of a material with a relative magnetic permeability larger than 1, typically a ferrite, which is arranged within the enclosure behind the front wall so that an open side of the core is directed towards the sensing face in order to direct the magnetic field of the coil towards a target in front of the sensing face, a hollow cylindrical metal member arranged perpendicular to the sensing face and surrounding the core, and a measuring circuit for measuring an attenuation of the oscillator due to eddy currents. The core is radially surrounded by a metal layer with a low electrical resistivity of less than 15 &#x3bc;&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm and with a thickness of less than 40 &#x3bc;m, in order to improve the embeddability of the sensor. Alternatively, this thin metal layer may be omitted, if the electrical resistivity of the metal member is adjusted to a value in the range of 15 &#x3bc;&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm-50 &#x3bc;&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm.

Inductive proximity sensor for embedded mounting and method of design

A rope position sensor for the surveillance of the position of the traction or carrying rope of a transport installation on a grooved pulley comprises an inductive distance measuring unit capable of emitting an alternating magnetic field and of detecting the attenuation of that magnetic field by the presence of the ropein a proximity zone. The sensor is adapted to detect the rope in at least three proximity zones (zzz) and to produce an output signal containing information indicating the proximity zone in which the rope is being detected to indicate the position of the rope at the pulley.

The optical distance detecting or measuring device comprises a light source with an emitting optic for projecting a light beam according to the axis of the emitting optic onto a target to be measured and a first detector defining the receiving axis contained in the same reference plane as the emitting axis. The device comprises at least a second detector that is aligned with the first detector on an axis contained in a plane that is inclined at an angle &#x3b1; with respect to the reference plane, said angle being comprised between 10&#xb0; and 170&#xb0;. Alternatively, two emitters may be arranged in an inclined plane and one receiver in the reference plane. This arrangement allows a significant improvement of the performance of such a device.

Optical distance measuring device

The optical device comprises an emitter optic for projecting a light beam onto an object, and a receptor optic for projecting the reflected light onto a detector. The emitter optic and the receptor optic each comprise a dome disposed in such a manner that the light beam passes through the dome in a plane which is parallel to the plane surface of the dome. This allows a very compact design which is particularly suitable for reflection detectors of small dimensions.

Optical device

The device for the measurement of distances and of the angle of incidence of a light beam comprises an optical emitting system in order to project the light beam onto the object to be measured, and an optical receiving system in order to project the reflected light onto position detectors. The optical receiving system comprises two prisms which refract the reflected light beam with an angular compression and expansion, respectively, thus allowing to reduce the dimensions and the sensitivity of a detector for the measurement of a given measuring range.

The method for the differential measurement of an angle of incidence of a luminous beam uses a polarized light beam which is passed twice through a birefringent plate followed by a polarizing analyzer in order to obtain a succession of interference fringes. The orientation or the mutual spacing between the crests of said fringes, which are a direct function of the measured angle (.gamma.), are analyzed by means of a suitable detector and of an electronic analyzing circuit. The measuring device comprises a single polarizing analyzer, a birefringent plate which is followed by a mirror in order to reflect the light beam through said birefringent plate a second time, and means for detecting the variations of the luminous intensity including an electronic analyzing circuit. The use of a double passage through a birefringent plate ajusts the optical elements in one plane (V) in order to optimize the efficiency and the sensitivity while measuring in the other plane (H), thus obtaining a device which is simple and at the same time very sensitive to angular displacements, for example for the measurement of vibrations.

For measuring an angle of incidence of a luminous beam, one employs a polarized luminous beam which is brought to pass though a birefringent plate followed by an analyzing polarizer, in order to obtain succession of fringes of interference, and one analyzes by means of an appropriate detector and an electronic circuit the spacings between the crests of said fringes, said spacings being a direct function of the angle to be measured. One can utilize a measuring device of an angle of incidence for measuring the distance between said device and a reflecting surface of the object to be measured, by determining for a certain position of the object a spacing of reference between the crests of the fringes of interference and by measuring the variations of the spacings as a function of the position of the object, in order to display them in units of length.
