Novel methods and compositions are provided for the biocontrol of plant diseases by use of a biological coating that confers both a protective and a curative effect for the control of postharvest decay. The coating includes chitosan salts, an antagonistic microorganism, and a cation. A composition of chitosan salts, CaCl and yeast is effective. The combined fungicidal activities of the chitosan salts and the antagonistic microorganism make the compositions of the present invention superior to previous coatings. When applied to the surface of a harvested plant commodity, the compositions both prevent and cure postharvest decay.

Biological coating with a protective and curative effect for the control of postharvest decay

Novel methods and compositions are provided for the biocontrol of plant diseases, in particular diseases causing plant postharvest decay. The novel compositions are &ldquo;biocontrol cocktails&rdquo; that are combinations of antagonistic microorganisms and antifungal agents. Suitable microorganisms include yeasts such as Candida spp. Suitable antifungal agents include enzymes or combinations of enzymes such as lysozyme or lyticase. The compositions are applied to the plants either to prevent or cure infections caused by microorganisms such as fungi. Synergistic effects occur. The methods and compositions are comparable to or better than synthetic fungicides or to either agent alone.

Mutant DSM 5483 proteases are derived by the replacement of at least one amino acid residue of the mature form of the DSM 5483 alkaline protease. The mutant proteases are expressed by genes which are mutated by site-specific mutagenesis. A device which mounts on uprights which enables an individual, when gripping it, to go through the range of motion of the pronated pull up exercise easier than gripping a round bar, due to an increase in muscle capacity. This is made possible by having two knobs for the thumbs to grasp projecting from the top of the device next to the center sides of two curves cut out of the top of the rectangular body of the device. In use, the device is first mounted on uprights that are high enough so that the user is suspended from the ground when gripping the device. The user then wraps his or her fingers around the curved openings and clutches the thumb knobs with his or her thumbs and performs the pronated pull up exercise, strengthening the muscles of the trunk and arms and stretching the back. An exercise device which may be attached to the side of a pool of water which enables an individual to do chin up type exercises while suspended in water by pulling down on a grasping bar which is attached to a lever arm by cables which are adjustable. The amount of pressure needed to pull down the grasping bar is regulated by varying the amount of weight placed on a bar attached to the resistance end of the lever arm. As the grasping bar is pulled upon, the lever arm rotates on an axle bar which is supported by two uprights. Running through the uprights below the axle bar is a safety bar which prevents the lever arm from making a full rotation on the axle bar and striking the user. The uprights which support the axle bar and safety bar are connected to horizontal bases which extend away from the pool. The vertical uprights and horizontal bases are connected together by corner plates and braces. The device is held in place by fasteners placed through the bases into the pool deck. Extending below the uprights into the water is a roller bar system which is composed of two rolling pipes which are positioned in front of the exerciser to keep his body in a comfortable alignment as he rises and falls in the water while pulling on the grasping bar. The roller bars are positioned through a system of guide pipes and modified pipe tees which serve as adjustable connectors.
