Polymerizable polyol (allyl carbonate) compositions

Described is a polymerizable organic composition comprising a polyol(allyl carbonate), e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), and an additive represented by the general formula

Describes polymerizable organic compositions of a major amount of a first monomer component which is a polyol(allyl carbonate), e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), and from about 2 to 35 weight percent of a second monomer component which is an alkoxylated bisphenol (or hydrogenated bisphenol) having acrylate or methacrylate groups, e.g., dimethacrylate of bisphenol A having 25 to 35 ethoxy units. Substantially completely cured polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Polymerizable polyol (allyl carbonate) composition

Describes polymerizable organic compositions of from about 30 to 95 weight percent of a first monomer component which is a polyol[(meth)acryloyl terminated carbonate], e.g., diethylene glycol bis[(methacryloyloxy)ethylene carbonate)]; and from about 5 to 70 weight percent of at least one monomer component selected from: (i) an alkoxylated diol, e.g., alkoxylated bisphenol, having acrylate or methacrylate groups, e.g., dimethacrylate of bisphenol A having 25 to 35 ethoxy units, (ii) a bis[(meth)acryloyl-terminated]polyethylene glycol, and (iii) a monomer having at least three ethylenically-unsaturated terminal groups. Substantially completely cured polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Optical resin composition from polyol((meth)acryloyl carbonate) monomer

A polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition comprising a partially polymerized mixture of ethylenically unsaturated compounds wherein: (a) the mixture of ethylenically unsaturated compounds which was partially polymerized comprised a mixture of diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) compounds each represented by Formula I: ##STR1## in which n is a positive integer, m is a positive integer, and the diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) compound for which the value of n is 1 constituted from 25 to 75 area percent of the mixture of diethylene glycol (allyl carbonate) compounds; and (b) the ethylenic double bond utilization of the polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition is at least 3 percent. The polymerizable, liquid, substantially gel-free composition exhibits low shrinkage in the mold when polymerized.

Describes polymerizable organic compositions of from about 30 to 95 weight percent of a first monomer component which is an alkoxylated diol, e.g., alkoxylated bisphenol, having acrylate or methacrylate groups, i.e., dimethacrylate of bisphenol A having an average of 1 to 4 ethoxy units, and from about 5 to 70 weight percent of a second monomer component which is an alkoxylated diol, e.g., alkoxylated bisphenol, having acrylate or methacrylate groups, i.e., dimethacrylate of bisphenol A having 25 to 70 ethoxy units. Optionally there may also be present from about 0 to 65 weight percent of at least one monomer component which is selected from: (i) a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer that is polymerizable by free radical initiation; (ii) a bis�(meth)acryloyl-terminated!polyethylene glycol monomer; and (iii) a monomer having at least three terminal ethylenically-unsaturated groups. Substantially completely cured polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Polymerizable composition

Describes polymerizable organic compositions of from about 5 to 90 weight percent of a first monomer component which is an alkoxylated diol, e.g., alkoxylated bisphenol, having acrylate or methacrylate groups, e.g., a dimethacrylate of bisphenol A having 25 to 35 ethoxy units, and from about 10 to 95 weight percent of a second monomer component which is different than the first monomer component and has at least three acrylate or methacrylate groups. There may also be present, from 0 to about 85 weight percent of a third polymerizable monomer component which has a single ethylenically unsaturated group that is polymerizable by free radical initiation. Substantially completely cured polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Described is a chemical feeder comprising a housing having a base and upwardly extending side walls that define a cavity for containing solid chemical material, e.g., calcium hypochlorite. A hollow coaxial chamber is located within the cavity and is seated on the base. The side walls of the chamber are spaced from the side walls of the housing, thereby to define an annular collection zone. A grid having a plurality of perforations covers the hollow coaxial chamber and has a flange associated with the edge of the grid, the perimeter of the flange being adjacent to, or close to but spaced from, the walls of the housing, thereby to permit liquid communication between the portion of the housing cavity above the grid with the collection zone. An inlet conduit is used to supply dissolving liquid to the hollow chamber. An outlet conduit from the annular collection zone to outside the housing wall removes liquid solution of solid chemical material from the collection zone. A valve connected to the inlet conduit controls the flow rate of dissolving liquid to the hollow chamber.

Chemical feeder

An apparatus for dissolving a solid chemical material including a housing having a base and sidewalls that define a cavity within which is seated a container that is spaced from the housing sidewalls and covered with a grid is described. A flange connects the upper end of the housing sidewall to the container sidewall above the grid. A plurality of arrayed openings in the container sidewall above the grid and below the flange level leads to an annular collection zone in the housing. An outlet discharge pipe is connected to the collection zone and an inlet pipe for charging dissolving liquid communicates with the container below the grid.

Described is particulate halogen-containing material, e.g., calcium hypochlorite, containing from about 0.1 to about 10 weight percent of colorant-treated particulate inorganic water soluble salt, e.g., sodium chloride. The colorant used with the sodium chloride salt is resistant to oxidation by the halogen specie in the material and is water dispersible. The amount of colorant used is from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent, based on the inorganic salt. Preferred are the water dispersible phthalocyanine colorants.

Solid halogen-containing composition and method for producing same

A chemical feeder having a collection reservoir and an erosion reservoir located within and spaced from the wall of the collection reservoir. An elongated cylinder is supported on the collection reservoir and the lower end of the cylinder is located in the collection reservoir. The collection reservoir has a water discharge outlet and the erosion reservoir has a water inlet with a valve to control the flow rate of water into the erosion reservoir. A canister containing solid chemical sanitizing elements is supported in the cylinder and its lower portion is located in the upper portion of the erosion reservoir. Openings are located in the lower end portion of the canister so that solid dry chemical sanitizing elements located in the lower end portion of the canister can be contacted by water in the erosion reservoir to erode and dissolve the solid elements to chemically treat water flowing out of the erosion reservoir into the collection reservoir.

Chemical feed apparatus

Granular calcium hypochlorite containing from about 0.001 to about 1.0 weight percent of finely-divided polyfluorinated polymer, e.g., polytetrafluoroethylene, dispersed throughout the granules is described. The product may be compressed and formed into shaped articles, e.g., tablets. The granules may be prepared by admixing the polyfluorinated polymer with particulate calcium hypochlorite, compacting the mixture and granulating the compacted product. Tablets prepared from the polyfluorinated polymer containing granular calcium hypochlorite dissolve in water at a rate slower than tablets prepared without the polyfluorinated polymer. Finely-divided calcium hypochlorite powder, e.g., powder of less than about 10 microns in size, is rendered more conveyable and compactible by the addition of the finely-divided polyfluorinated polymer; and mixtures of finely-divided calcium hypochlorite powder and particulate calcium hypochlorite is rendered more readily compactible.

Recreational water, e.g., swimming pools, as opposed to industrial water, containing a source of free available halogen, e.g., chlorine, is treated with amounts of a 2-oxazolidinone, e.g., 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolidinone to thereby inhibit the growth of algae during the absence of biocidal amounts of free available halogen.
