A wire/fiber ring having two layers applied in four clock positions. Each layer includes a first material strand having a first diameter and a second material strand having a second diameter different from the first diameter. A second or any subsequent layer is disposed such that there is unambiguous nesting between strands in adjacent layers. After the array is built-up, wire is over-wrapped around the array to hold it in place during subsequent consolidation steps, which take place after the built-up array is sealed in an air-tight container and evacuated. After heating and application of pressure a wire/fiber array having a void content of about 12% and a fiber content of between about 0% to 70% and preferably between about 30% and 45% can be achieved.

A method of retaining composite preforms in the nature of fiber/metal matrix composites in position during processing, comprising the steps of positioning a predetermined assembly of fibers and metal matrix on a mandrel. The metal matrix may be in the form of wires, powder or foil. A retaining wire of a suitable heat resistant metal, such as titanium is spirally wound under tension over the fiber/metal matrix assembly to retain the assembly in a predetermined position on the mandrel during subsequent processing.

The present invention relates to tooling for the fabrication of composite materials, particularly layered composite materials. The tooling apparatus encapsulates the composite material and uses an applied pressure, either atmospheric, induced gaseous or mechanical, to the material to retain it in place during off-gassing and/or consolidation.

Tooling apparatus for composite fabrication

A manufacturing method of combining wires and fibers to fabricate fiber reinforced composites is disclosed. The fibers are drum wound on an adhesive-coated substrate followed by coating with a barrier layer to preserve the fiber spacing. A layer of the adhesive material is then applied to the fiber wrap and wire is wound therearound. A series of increasingly viscous tacky materials can then be applied to the wire wraps so that all gaps between the wires are filled. The inventive method can be used to form standard wire/fiber preforms, variable spacing wire/fiber preforms, ring preforms and wire only preforms which can be processed into fiber reinforced composite materials.

Wire preforms for composite material manufacture and methods of making

The present invention relates to a manufacturing method of applying dry powder in a controlled manner to a variety of surfaces to form shapes, coatings, or composite materials. This is achieved by coating the surface with a tacky substance, applying the powder, and then coating the powder with a barrier coating that is insoluble in the solvent used in the tacky layer. The process is repeated to add the desired amount of powder. By the selection of powder size, size distribution, shape, and number of layers, precise control of mass loading can be achieved. The method can be used with titanium powder to form powder-coated fiber, non-woven mat, and tape cast performs which can be processed into fiber reinforced composite materials.
