This invention relates generally to a system and process for recovery of select minerals and lithium from a geothermal brine. The system and process are configured for the sequential recovery of zinc, manganese, and lithium from a Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area brine. The system and process includes: 1) an impurity removal circuit; then 2) a continuous counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) circuit for selectively recovering lithium chloride from the brine flow and concentrating it using a CCIX unit; and then 3) a lithium chloride conversion circuit for converting lithium chloride to lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide product.

The present invention relates to a process for the recovery of cobalt comprising: (i) providing a high tenor cobalt solution wherein the high tenor cobalt solution comprises cobalt and nickel; (ii) contacting the high tenor cobalt solution with an N-(2-hydroxypropyl)picolylamine resin to load the N-(2-hydroxypropyl)picolylamine resin with cobalt and nickel; (iii) eluting the cobalt from the loaded N-(2-hydroxypropyl)picolylamine resin; and (iv) eluting the nickel from the loaded N-(2-hydroxypropyl)picolylamine resin.

Process for separating copper and/or nickel from cobalt containing solutions

A method for extracting cobalt from copper raffinate. First, a supply of raffinate containing at least cobalt, copper, ferric iron and nickel, is provided. The raffinate is pretreated by one or all of raising the raffinate pH level; removing solids; and, reducing ferric iron to ferrous iron. Substantially all copper is removed using first ion exchange resin selective for copper. A second ion exchange resin selective for both cobalt and nickel is used to remove the cobalt and nickel. Cobalt and nickel are separately eluted from the second ion exchange resin.

A method of regenerating N-Methyl-D-glu-camine-functional resin that has been used for boron-removal uses a closed recirculating loop for treating the conjugate acid salt of the N-Methyl-D-glucamine functionality of the resin. The new method reduces rinse water demand and improves pH control in a water treatment system. The new method can be used to improve the performance of boron-selective resins in stand-alone systems or as a second stage in a reverse osmosis seawater desalination system. The regeneration method is useful in any application where weakly basic anion exchange resin in the conjugate acid salt form is to be regenerated (neutralized) by alkaline treatment. Possible end use applications are in drinking water processing, agricultural water treatment, sweetener production, waste water processing, mining hydrometallurgy, and condensate polishing.

Alkaline regeneration of N-methyl-D-glucamine functional resins

Methods are disclosed for the regeneration of fouled ion exchange (IX) resins. In one embodiment, the fouled resin is treated simultaneously with reducing agent and acid. In a preferred embodiment, fouled resin is treated with reducing agent and then with acid. Use of reducing agent prior to the use of acid results in surprisingly unexpected improved cleaning as compared to simultaneous treatment with reducing agent and acid.
