A system includes a data shuttle with rows of data storage devices, which are communicatively coupled to a shared printed circuit board assembly. Each row includes multiple data storage devices. The printed circuit board assembly is configured to communicatively couple to a first controller to enable storing data to the data storage devices and to communicatively coupled to a second controller to enable transferring data from the data storage devices.

Modular data storage systems

A method for reducing susceptibility to vibration for a storage device is provided. The method includes running a performance test to the storage device over a predetermined range of vibration frequencies and determining there is a frequency of concern for the storage device. The method also includes establishing resonant frequencies of the storage device and determining if a resonant frequency of the storage device corresponds to the frequency of concern. If a resonant frequency corresponds to the frequency of concern, then the method includes reducing stiffness of a plurality of mounting members coupled to the storage device and repeating running the performance test, determining there is a frequency of concern, determining a resonant frequency overlaps a frequency of concern, and reducing stiffness of the plurality of mounting members until one of there are no frequencies of concern and a resonant frequency does not correspond to a frequency of concern.

Method and apparatus for mitigating induced shock and vibration

A data storage enclosure can house and electrically connect to multiple data storage devices respectively secured by a carrier. A toolless data storage device carrier can be configured with a data storage device disposed between first and second rails and a clip physically contacting each rail while spanning the data storage device. The clip being shaped to continuously force each rail into contact with the data storage device.

A data storage enclosure can have one or more data storage devices positioned in an enclosure slot having one or more stops. A data storage device can be attached to a rail having a rail width and having first and second protrusions offset from one another. The first and second protrusions may each have protrusion widths that are less than the rail width with the second protrusion shaped to provide a positive stop that retains the rail in an enclosure slot.

A storage enclosure includes a chassis, which includes a plurality of drawers arranged horizontally in the chassis. Each drawer of the plurality of drawers is extendable through a front surface of the chassis and is able to mount one or more side-accessible storage devices. For any drawer of the plurality of drawers bordering a side surface of the chassis, when the drawer is extended all storage devices are inserted to or removed from the drawer through an opposite side of the drawer to the side surface of the chassis.

High density data storage system with improved storage device access

An improved storage device sled is provided. The storage device sled includes first and second portions, each of which includes a threaded fastener, a longitudinal member, and a bezel member. The longitudinal members are configured to couple to mounting holes of a storage device. Each of the bezel members is orthogonal to a longitudinal member. One of the bezel members includes a latching clip and cutouts to receive one or more alignment projections. The other bezel member includes a latching clip receiver, configured to receive and capture the latching clip, and the one or more alignment projections. Each of the longitudinal members includes a hole for the threaded fastener, which retains the longitudinal member to a mounting hole on a side of the storage device. The longitudinal members also include a tapered post, which captures a mounting hole on a side of the storage device.

A data storage system with a controller that receives shock data from a shock detection sensor and methods utilizing such a controller are provided. The data storage system controller receives information or signals regarding shock events from a shock sensor, enabling the data storage system controller to take remedial action. The particular remedial action taken may be dependent on the severity of the detected shock event. The data storage system controller may receive information regarding shock events from shock sensors provided separately from the data storage system controller, allowing the data storage system controller to take remedial action that is tailored to the locale of a shock event.

Method and apparatus utilizing shock sensors on storage devices

A data storage system controller having a shock detection sensor and methods utilizing such a controller are provided. The data storage system controller receives information or signals regarding shock events from the associated shock sensor, enabling the data storage system controller to take remedial action. The particular remedial action taken may be dependent on the severity of the detected shock event. The data storage system controller may also receive information regarding shock events from shock sensors provided separately from the data storage system controller, allowing the data storage system controller to take remedial action that is tailored to the locale of a shock event.

Method and apparatus for reducing acoustic noise emission in a disc drive assembly. A housing of the disc drive includes first and second plates and side walls which cooperate to form an enclosure for an excitation source disposed within the housing. At least a selected one of the plates has a contact point to which the excitation source is mechanically coupled, a first portion of the selected plate surrounding the contact point and a second portion thereof disposed between the first portion and an outer perimeter of the selected plate, with the second portion having an increased compliance with respect to the first portion. The increased compliance can be formed by reducing the thickness of the second portion. Damping material can be additionally supported by the second portion to provide further acoustic noise reduction.

Acoustic isolator for a disc drive assembly

A peripherally extending acoustic compliance area in a disc drive housing which reduces emission of acoustic noise by the disc drive. The housing includes first and second plates and side walls which cooperate to form an enclosure for an excitation source disposed within the housing. At least a selected one of the plates has a contact point to which the excitation source is mechanically coupled, a first portion of the selected plate surrounding the contact point and a second portion thereof disposed between the first portion and an outer perimeter of the selected plate, with the second portion having an increased compliance with respect to the first portion. The increased compliance can be formed by reducing the thickness of the second portion. Damping material can be additionally supported by the second portion to provide further acoustic noise reduction.

An improved acoustic isolation apparatus for reducing the total acoustic noise of a disc drive assembly and the like, comprising at least one acoustic isolator having a selectively reduced thickness acoustic compliance area disposed between an excitation source and a support member to impede coupling of vibrations from the excitation source and the structure member to prevent the vibrations from inducing harmonic vibrations in the support member, thus reducing the total acoustic noise.

An improved acoustic isolation apparatus for reducing the total acoustic noise of a disc drive assembly and the like, comprising at least one acoustic compliance area disposed between an excitation source and a support member to impede coupling of vibrations from the excitation source to the support member to prevent the vibrations from inducing harmonic vibrations in the support member, thus reducing the total acoustic noise.
