Various embodiments relate to a path computation element (PCE) configured to control a network having ingress edge nodes, interior nodes, and egress edge nodes, including: a network interface configured to communicate with the network; a memory; and a processor coupled to the memory and the network interface, wherein the processor is further configured to: receive a request for a first continuous guaranteed latency (CGL) flow to be carried by the network; make routing and admission control decisions for the requested first CGL flow without provisioning of the first CGL flow and the configuration of schedulers in the interior nodes of the network; and provide flow shaping parameters to a flow shaper at an ingress edge node of the first CGL flow.

Software-defined guaranteed-latency networking

An application specific interface (AA-NAPI) associated with an application for the purpose of controlling the networking aspects of the application session is provided by communication service provider (CSP). Cost model of network service types associated with a specific application type is learned by using the AA-NAPI. For each service-point joining the session, network properties are queried by using the AA-NAPI. During continuous service quality monitoring, upon detection of quality degradation leading to the decision to upgrade session quality, network service-type associated with a specific server-point is changed by using the AA-NAPI. Network specific actions are taken to reconfigure the network so that the requested service type is received by the specific service-point. New network capability is activated to improve network service level by using the AA-NAPI. Network specific actions are taken by the network to install new network capabilities so that the specific service-point's service quality is improved as requested.

Method, an apparatus and a computer program product for network-as-a-service model

The present disclosure generally discloses an adaptive bitrate streaming support capability configured to support adaptive bitrate streaming of content. The adaptive bitrate streaming support capability is configured to support adaptive bitrate streaming of content via a wireless access network including an application scheduler and a wireless access device. The application scheduler receives an adaptive bitrate streaming flow and sends the adaptive bitrate streaming flow toward the wireless access device based on scheduling of the adaptive bitrate streaming flow at the application scheduler. The wireless access device determines feedback information associated with the adaptive bitrate streaming flow and provides the feedback information associated with the adaptive bitrate streaming flow to the application scheduler. The application scheduler determines scheduling of the adaptive bitrate streaming flow, for transmission toward the wireless access device, based on the feedback information associated with the adaptive bitrate streaming flow.

Quality-of-experience for adaptive bitrate streaming

The present disclosure generally discloses a scheduling control capability for controlling scheduling of transmissions where adaptive bitrate streaming is used for delivery of content (e.g., video content or other types of content which may be streamed using adaptive bitrate streaming) from source devices to end devices. The scheduling control capability may be configured to control scheduling of transmissions of adaptive bitrate streaming flows based on priority levels assigned to the adaptive bitrate streaming flows. The scheduling control capability may be configured to dynamically control the priority levels assigned to the adaptive bitrate streaming flows. The scheduling control capability may be configured to dynamically control the priority levels assigned to the adaptive bitrate streaming flows, for use in controlling the scheduling of transmissions of the adaptive bitrate streaming flows, in manner for improving user quality-of-experience, in a manner for improving spectral efficiency, or the like, as well as various combinations thereof.

Scheduling transmissions of adaptive bitrate streaming flows

A metric of cell congestion is determined using an average physical resource block rate that is expected to be allocated for a very active user equipment bearer that is a persistent average rate. The average physical resource block rate is mapped to congestion levels and this information is exported to an application function or a radio access network function in order to mitigate congestion. An average bearer throughput for the user equipment can be calculated based on the average physical resource block rate.

The invention includes a method and apparatus for authenticating a wireless node requesting to join a network. A method includes receiving an authentication request from the wireless node, negotiating at least one authentication parameter with the wireless node, deriving a first encryption key using the at least one authentication parameter, encrypting a second encryption key using the first encryption key, and propagating the encrypted second encryption key toward the wireless node, wherein the wireless node independently derives the first encryption key for use in decrypting the encrypted second encryption key received from the authentication server node. The wireless node decrypts the encrypted second encryption key and stores the second encryption key for use to securely communicate with other wireless nodes of the network. In one embodiment, the present invention may be implemented using a modified version of the EAP-TLS protocol, in which rather than a Pairwise Master Key (PMK) being sent from the authentication server node to the wireless node, the authentication server node and the wireless node each derive the PMK and the authentication server node securely provides a group encryption key to the wireless node by encrypting the group encryption key using the PMK.

Method and apparatus for authenticating nodes in a wireless network

A video session management capability is disclosed. The video session management capability enables management of potential and/or established video sessions of mobile devices of a cellular sector (e.g., for supporting dynamic changes to the transmission bit rates of established video sessions in a cellular sector). In response to an indication of a condition associated with the cellular sector, a manager determines, for each of a plurality video senders of a respective plurality of uplink video sessions of the cellular sector, a modified transmission bit rate for the video sender for the uplink video session and propagates, toward the video sender, a message for instructing the video sender to use the modified transmission bit rate for its uplink video session.

Method and apparatus for controlling wireless uplink sessions

A video session scheduling capability is disclosed. The video session scheduling capability enables scheduling of video transmissions by mobile devices of a cellular sector. In response to a request by a mobile device to transmit a video via a wireless uplink of the cellular sector, a scheduler determines scheduling of the video session. The scheduler receives information indicative of an amount of wireless uplink resources available for supporting uplink video sessions within the cellular sector, receives information associated with the request by the mobile device to establish a video session for transmission of video content from the mobile device via a wireless uplink in the cellular sector, and determines, using the information indicative of an amount of wireless uplink resources available within the cellular sector and the information associated with the video session request, scheduling of the video session via the wireless uplink in the cellular sector.

A method is provided to efficiently transport video signals on a wireless network when resources are scarce. In an embodiment, a user's mobile terminal codes the video in multiple layers. If resources are scarce, the mobile terminal reduces current bandwidth requirements by streaming a subset, i.e., one or more of the lower coded video layers only. This streamed video can be viewed by peers and saved on a server. Meanwhile, the higher layers that were not sent are saved on the mobile device. When network resources eventually become available, the saved higher layers only are sent to the destination server that saved the lower layers. The entire video can then be reconstructed on the destination server.

Method of opportunity-based transmission of wireless video

An application server in a communication network receives a plurality of data streams from a plurality of mobile stations that include a client for the application server. The data streams may be video, audio or a combination thereof and include an indicator of originating location of the data stream. A subset of the plurality of data streams that originates from an area are determined. The first set may also be determined based on a tag that is included in each of the data streams of the first set, the tag indicating a sharing status for a respective data stream and/or a subject of the respective data stream. A first data stream of the first subset transmitted to a service subscriber having an interest preference corresponding to the tag of first set data streams. The transmitted first data stream may include overlay content associated with the service provider.

System and method of geo-concentrated video detection

A method and apparatus are provided for transmitting, over a wireless link, video that is coded in multiple layers such that higher priority for the use of the transmission resources may be given to the lower layers of the layered video stream. The level of priority is signified by the session identification parameters, i.e., by the source and destination ip addresses and port numbers. These parameters are assigned to the base layer and to the one or more additional layers, respectively, such that at least two of said layers are assigned different parameter sets. At least the base layer is then transmitted on the wireless link.

A method for operating a personal communication device includes, using a user interface, selecting a policy type and entering parameters of the selected policy type, thereby to designate a policy to govern the distribution of a video signal to viewers by a wireless network. One or more messages are transmitted from the personal communication device, in which the policy is communicated to a video server within the wireless network. A prompt is received from the video server to begin transmitting the video signal, and then the personal communication device begins wirelessly transmitting the video signal on an uplink to the wireless network for distribution according to the policy.

The invention includes a method and apparatus for authenticating a visiting node in a wireless network. A method includes receiving a request to transfer a user database of a visiting node, obtaining the visiting node user database from the visiting node in response to a determination to update a master user database to include the visiting node user database, and merging the visiting node user database with the master user database. The request to transfer the visiting node user database is received, from the visiting node, at a primary authentication node of the network. The visiting node user database includes entries for users associated with the visiting node. The master user database includes entries for users associated with nodes authenticated by the primary authentication node of the network.
