A high strength polymer-based blank cartridge having a first end; a shoulder disposed approximate the first end; a second end opposite the first end; and an insert engaged to the second end. A metal sleeve extends between the shoulder and insert, and a polymer sheath covers at least the metal sleeve. A propellant chamber is formed between the shoulder and the insert by at least the metal sleeve, and the propellant chamber has an unobstructed and a reduced volume, wherein the reduced volume is reduced in comparison to a propellant chamber of a standard cartridge.

A high strength polymer-based cartridge casing inclosing a volume, with a first end having a mouth, a neck extending away from the mouth, a shoulder extending below the neck and away from the first end and a cartridge body formed below the shoulder. An insert is attached to the cartridge body opposite the shoulder and having a centerline. A projectile is disposed in the mouth having a particular caliber. The neck, the shoulder, and the cartridge body are formed from a polymer. The shoulder comprises a shoulder angle that is standard for the particular caliber. The neck has a neck thickness greater than a standard neck thickness for the particular caliber, and a neck length longer than a standard neck length for the particular caliber as detailed by a standards organization.

An ammunition article including a polymer cartridge case with a mouth at a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a propellant chamber located between the first end and the second end. A projectile can be fitted into the mouth and a metal base insert can be joined at the second end. The metal base insert can include a primer. The metal base insert and the polymer cartridge case remain joined together as a single piece assembly upon loading, firing and removal from a chamber of a firearm for a polymer case temperature between about −65° F. (−54° C.) to about 165° F. (74° C.).

A high strength polymer-based cartridge casing can include an upper polymer component, molded from a polymer. The upper component has a first end having a mouth, at least a wall between the first end and a second end of the upper component opposite the first end, an overlap portion extending from the wall near the second end. An upper insert is included and has a first end and an opposing second end, a molded area disposed approximate the first end, that engages the overlap portion to join the upper polymer component and the upper insert, and an insert engagement area disposed approximate to the second end. Further, a lower insert has a front end and a back end, an upper insert engagement area engaging with the insert engagement area, a rim and groove disposed around an outside of the lower insert, and a primer pocket disposed inside the back end. Lastly, a flash hole is inside the lower insert and communicates between the primer pocket and upper polymer component.

A high strength polymer-based cartridge having a polymer case with a first end having a mouth. A body can be formed below the mouth and having a propellant chamber and a longitudinal axis. A back end can be formed opposite the first end and formed below the body, with a first snap ridge comprising a first ridge angle at approximately at 90° to the longitudinal axis; and a second snap ridge, positioned closer to the first end than the first snap ridge, comprising a second ridge angle at approximately at 90° to the longitudinal axis. Further, an insert is configured to engage the back end.

An ammunition container can include a bottom wall, a first side wall and an opposing second side wall, and a front wall and an opposing rear wall. An interior volume can be formed from the five walls. A top lid can be removably engaged to one of the first side wall, the second side wall, the front wall, and the rear wall, opposite the bottom wall. The lid encloses the interior volume. A first interlocking stacking element can have a first raised protrusion forming a first shape and disposed on the top lid or the bottom wall. A second interlocking stacking element of second raised protrusions forming a second shape on the opposite wall. It can be sized or shaped to interlock with the first interlocking stacking element. The first and second interlocking elements can prevent movement along at least one axis or two axes (i.e. sliding or disengagement).

A high strength polymer-based cartridge has a polymer case with a mouth, a neck, a shoulder below the neck, and a body below the shoulder and having a case thickness (Tc). The body has a flat portion comprising a pull thickness (Tp), and a dip, closer to the shoulder than the flat portion and comprising a dip thickness (Tb). The cartridge can also include an insert attached to the polymer case opposite the shoulder. The insert can have a flat section contacting the flat portion and comprising an insert wall thickness (Ti), and a bulge engaging the dip to maintain the insert on the polymer case. Tc, Tp, Tb, and Ti are related by Tp+Tb+Ti=Tc. These variables also have ranges where Tp is at least to 20% of Tc, Tb is greater than or equal to Tp, and Tc is a function of a loaded projectile.

A high strength polymer-based cartridge having a first end; a neck disposed at the first end and a shoulder disposed below the neck to form a bottleneck cartridge. A second end is opposite the first end and an insert is engaged to the second end. A propellant chamber is formed between the shoulder and the insert and has a volume. An extension extends from the neck opposite the shoulder and a cap is formed on the extension, partially sealing the propellant chamber.

An ammunition article comprises a polymer cartridge case formed of a polymer composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer, preferably the polymer composition having a density of less than 1.35 determined in accordance with ASTM D792, the polymer cartridge case having a first end, an opposing second end, and a chamber disposed between the first end and the second end for receiving a propellant; a projectile attached to the first end of the polymer cartridge case; a metal base insert joined to the second end of the polymer cartridge case; and a primer carried by the metal base insert; wherein the metal base insert and the polymer cartridge case remain joined together as a single piece assembly upon loading, firing and removal from a chamber of a firearm for a polymer case temperature of &#x2212;65&#xb0; F. (&#x2212;54&#xb0; C.) to 165&#xb0; F. (74&#xb0; C.).

Lightweight ammunition articles comprising a polymer cartridge case

A cartridge has a polymer case with a mouth, a neck having a neck thickness (Tn), a shoulder, and a body having a case thickness (Tc). The body has a flat portion comprising a minimum thickness, a pull thickness (Tp), and a dip comprising a dip thickness (Tb). The cartridge also includes an insert attached to the polymer case opposite the shoulder. The insert can a bulge engaging the dip to maintain the insert on the polymer case. Tb and Tn are related by 1.0&#x2264;Tb/Tn&#x2264;1.5 or just &#x3c;1.5. The ratio of the minimum thickness of the body to the neck thickness is between about 1.0 and about 1.5. The ratio of Tb to Tn includes, and/or the minimum thickness of the body to the neck thickness includes, but is not limited to, ratios of 1.00, 1.05, 1.10, 1.15, 1.20, 1.25, 1.30, 1.35, 1.40, 1.45, and 1.50.
