A powder coating composition includes an epoxy resin and a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer having a glass transition temperature less than 105&#xb0; C. The compositions provide low gloss finishes at low curing temperatures, as well as consistent gloss over a wide range of curing temperatures.

Powder coating composition, method for the curing thereof, and articles derived therefrom

A powder coating composition includes an acid-functional polyester resin and a matting agent selected from styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers and acid-functional acrylic resins. The compositions provide low gloss finishes at low curing temperatures, as well as consistent gloss over a wide range of curing temperatures.

Coating powders are provided which provide high-temperature, translucent coatings useful for light-emitting devices such as incandescent bulbs. The coating powders comprise a binder, at least 90 wt % up to 100 wt % of which is a silicone resin. The coating powders are filled with between about 10 and about 50 phr of fillers selected from the group consisting of needle-like calcium metasilicate, mica, rod-like glass particles, and mixtures thereof, the fillers having aspect ratios between about 8 and about 40.

Translucent high-temperature powder coatings

Coating compositions comprising an epoxy resin and a curative which is methylenedisalicylic acid and/or a methylendisalicylic acid ring-substituted homologue are found to cure at and produce a wrinkle finish at relatively low temperatures when a borontrifluoride:amine complex is used as the cure catalyst.

A coating powder for producing a high temperature resistant coating has a resin system which comprises (A) between about 50 and about 93 wt % based on total of (A) plus (B) of a silicone resin and (B) between about 7 and about 50 wt % based on total weight of (A) plus (B) of a polyhydroxyl component. The silicone resin (A) of the coating powder has organic substitutents selected from the group consisting of phenyl, methyl, C.sub.2 through C.sub.6 alkyl and mixtures thereof. The silicone resin has a viscosity of between about 500 and about 10,000 cps at 150.degree. C., a condensable hydroxyl content of between about 2 and about 4.5 wt %, and a glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) of about 55.degree. C. or above. The silicone resin preferably contains about 0.2% or less of organic solvents. The polyhydroxyl component (B) is a polyhydroxyl compound or blends of polyhydroxyl compounds with average hydroxyl equivalent weight of between 100 and 500, containing an average of at least three hydroxyl groups per molecule, and of number average molecular weight between 300 and 20,000. The blend of the silicone resin (A) and polyhydroxyl component (B) should have a combined glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) of at least about 50.degree. C.

Coating powder for high temperature resistant coatings

Coating powder compositions comprise A) between about 60 and about 90 wt %, relative to total weight of A) plus B) plus C), of an acrylic polymer having a weight average molecular weight of between about 1000 and about 30,000, a carboxylic acid equivalent weight of from about 300 to about 1000 and a glass transition temperature of about 45.degree. C. or above and B) between about 5 and about 30 wt %, relative to total weight of A) plus B) plus C) of an adduct prepared from i) between about 20 and about 50 wt %, relative to total weight of i) plus ii), of a curing agent reactive with carboxylic acid groups and ii) between about 50 and about 80 wt %, relative to total weight of i) plus ii), of a polyester resin formed primarily from linear aliphatic diols and dicarboxylic acids, the polyester having functional groups reactive with said curing agent i), and C) between about 2 and about 30 wt % relative to the total weight of A) plus B) plus C) of a curing agent reactive with carboxylic acid groups. The sum of un-reacted functional groups of adduct B) plus curing agent C) is at a stoichiometric equivalent relative to said carboxylic acid functionality of said acrylic polymer A) of between about 0.5 and about 1.5. Using sufficient amounts of an appropriate cure catalyst, the composition may be fused and cured at temperatures of 300.degree. F. or below, even 250.degree. C. or below, making the coating composition suitable for coating wood and wood products.

Flexible, weatherable, acrylic coating powder

A coating powder for providing a high temperature resistance coating has a silicone resin binder system which is either substantially all silicone resin or an --OH-- functional silicone resin adduct plus blocked, multi --NCO functional curative. The coating powder is pigmented with titanium dioxide which is either non-coated or coated with a sufficiently low level of an inorganic oxide such that when slurried in water, the pH is 7 or above. The coating powder preferably contains at least 40 phr mica and/or calcium metasilicate, preferably between 2 and about 20 phr aluminum. The coating powder may also contain zinc to protect the underlying substrate from corrosion and high-temperature pigments, particularly ceramic pigments.

A silicone resin for forming a coating powder has organic substitutents selected from the group consisting of phenyl, methyl, C.sub.2 through C.sub.6 alkyl and mixtures thereof; a viscosity of between about 500 and about 10,000 cps at 150.degree. C.; a condensable hydroxyl content of between about 2.0 and about 4.5 wt %; a glass transition temperature of about 55.degree. C. or above; and about 0.2% or less of organic solvent.

An epoxy coating powder composition and a method for controlling the denseness of cured wrinkle finish patterns are provided by the use of a curing agent mixture comprising a blocked Lewis acid, methylenedisalicylic acid and a ring-substituted homolog thereof having the formula ##STR1## wherein x and y are from 1 to 3, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are, independently, hydrogen, alkyl groups having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryl groups having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, or aryl-substituted methylene groups; with the proviso that when x=y=3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 .noteq.hydrogen; wherein the ratio of methylene disalicylic acid and the ring-substituted homolog is from about 50:50 to about 2:98 by weight.

Wrinkle epoxy powder coating with acid and its homolog

Powdered coating compositions and methods for obtaining improved wrinkled finishes with epoxy powder coatings are provided which utilize a color stabilizer effective to avoid an excessive red color shift upon cure of the composition.

Color stable wrinkle finish epoxy powder coating

The use of an amine salt of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as a catalyst for the curing of hydroxyl-functional resins provides a wrinkle finish. The hydroxy-function may be present in polyesters, epoxies, and acrylate or methacrylate resins, among others. The polyester resins which are able to provide such a finish have a hot plate melt flow of at least about 50 mm but if it is more than 150 mm, the gel time of the resin must not be more than about 280 seconds. The minimum gel time in the case of polyesters is about 30 seconds.
