The present invention is a system and method that produces features and indices that indicate the presence or absence of a disease or condition, or of the progression of a disease or condition. The system and method of the present invention also produce features and indices that predict responsiveness to medication from a premedication baseline. The system and method of the present invention further incorporates a testing methodology to improve the performance characteristics of the features or indices. To obtain such features and indices, time domain, power spectrum, bispectrum and higher order spectrum values are derived from biopotential signals taken from the subject being tested.

A portable self contained battery charger and radio for charging batteries for power tools. The portable self contained battery charger and radio includes a portable housing having a top wall which is removable from the housing. A first plug is adapted for connecting to a home electrical power outlet. The first plug is a two prong plug operationally coupled to a first cord. A second plug for a vehicle power outlet is a cylinder having a first end and a second end. A wall connects the first and second ends. The first end has an electrical contact thereon and the wall of the second plug has an electrical contact thereon. The second end of the second plug is affixed to a second cord such that the first and second electrical contacts of the second plug are electrically coupled to the second cord. The first and second plugs provide power. A power cell for transforming current is mounted within the housing and has an outlet therein adapted to receive two pronged plugs. The power cell is operationally coupled to the power supply. A sound system for transforming audio and radio signals into sound is mounted in the housing and operationally coupled to the power cell. Two speakers are mounted in the front wall, each of which is operationally coupled to the sound system. A rechargeable battery for supplying power to the power cell is operationally coupled to the power cell. A recharger compartment for inserting battery rechargers is within the housing.

Portable self contained battery charger and radio

Disclosed is an electrode array (i.e., 'sensor') and a method for separating near and far-field signals. In one embodiment a horizontal array is used, and in an alternate embodiment a vertical array is used. The electrode array consists of two well-separated pairs of closely spaced electrodes (and a separate ground element). In a typical application of collecting a channel of EEG, 'sensing' electrodes are placed in standard locations (e.g., R and Ctr) with a ground electrode placed elsewhere on the head. The voltage measured between the well-separated sensing electrodes is the far-field dominant (i.e., EEG-dominant) channel. Additional electrodes are placed near each of the two sensing electrodes. (The additional electrodes are immediately lateral to the existing electrodes in the horizontal array, and are immediately above the existing electrodes in the vertical array.) The voltages measured between the pairs of closely spaced electrodes are near-field dominant (i.e., EMG/EOG-dominant) channels. The EEG, EMG and EOG signals can be enhanced by uncoupling them by combining information from all channels. The sensor is connected to a monitor via a patient interface cable (PIC). The sensor contains additional circuitry at the connection site that is used by the monitor to identify the presence and type of sensor, and to configure the monitor to invoke the appropriate software that will apply the method of the current invention to collect and uncouple the EEG, EMG and EOG.

Method for enhancing and separating biopotential signals

The disclosed filter removes cardiac artifacts from signals representative of a patient's cerebral activity. The filter preferably replaces portions of the signal including artifacts with temporally adjacent artifact free portions.

Method and system for the extraction of cardiac artifacts from EEG

Disclosed is a system and method to derive a diagnostic index indicative of a selected cerebral phenomena which obtains 19 unipolar EEG signals from regions of interest on both the left and right hemispheres of a subject's brain. The system uses high-gain, low-noise amplifiers to maximize the dynamic range for low energy wave components of the signals. Band-pass filtering is used to reduce noise and to avoid aliasing. The system applies commonly used digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to digitize, to low-pass filter (100 Hz), and to decimate the signals. Power spectral, bispectral, and higher-order spectral processing is then performed. In a preferred embodiment, the system divides the most recent 63 seconds of digitized EEG data from each lead into 60 4-second intervals, each with 3 seconds of overlap with the previous interval. For a selected set of derived leads, the system produces auto power spectrum, autobispectrum, and auto higher-order spectrum variables, by using either a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based approach or a parametric approach. Any pair of leads can be combined to compute cross power spectrum, cross bispectrum, and cross higher-order spectrum variables. The spectral values are separated into bins and a value representative of the bin is selected or computed and then each value is multiplied by a predetermined coefficient. The resulting products are summed to arrive at the diagnostic index.

Cerebral biopotential analysis system and method

An output circuit (62) for generating a signal in the form of a voltage between an output signal node and an output reference node (60) receives power from a pair of voltage regulators (Q1 and 68, Q2 and 70). The regulators are connected in power-circuit series so as to be powered by the difference between the output potentials of two opposite-polarity supplies without a direct low-impedance connection between the power-supply ground (73) and the output reference node (60). To avoid large current flow in any external path between an output reference node (60) of an electronic circuit and the ground node (73) of its power supply, a current sensor (R1, R2, 86) senses the net current that the power supplies provide to the circuitry that includes the regulators, and it controls variable loads (Q3, Q4) that selectively drive current into and draw current from the reference node (60) so as to drive the net current to zero.
