Nitrogen containing acrylic copolymers

A copolymer comprising units derived from (a) methaciylic acid esters containing from about 9 to about 25 carbon atoms in the ester group and (b) methacrylic acid esters containing from 7 to about 12 carbon atoms in the ester group, said ester groups having 2-(C,alkyl)-substituents, and optionally (c) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid esters containing from 2 to about 8 carbon atoms in the ester group atoms and which are different from methacrylic acid esters (a) and (b), vinyl aromatic compounds, and nitrogen-containing vinyl monomers with the proviso that no more than 60% by weight of the esters contain not more than 11 carbon atoms in the ester group. Viscosity improvers for lubricating oil compositions

Non-aqueous electrorheological fluids are described which comprise a major amount of a hydrophobic liquid phase and a minor amount of a dispersed particulate phase of a polyaniline prepared by polymerizing aniline in the presence of an oxidizing agent and from about 0.1 to about 1.6 moles of an acid per mole of aniline to form an acid salt of polyaniline, and thereafter treating the acid salt with a base. The polyanilines may be prepared from aniline or from mixtures of aniline and other monomers such as pyrroles, vinyl pyridines, vinyl pyrrolidones, thiophenes, vinylidene halides, phenothiazines, imidazolines, N-phenyl-p-phenylene diamines or mixtures thereof. The electrorheological fluids prepared in accordance with the present invention are useful in a variety of applications including flotational coupling devices such as clutches for automobiles or industrial motors, transmissions, brakes or tension control devices; and linear damping devices such as shock absorbers, engine mounts and hydraulic actuators.

Electrorheological fluids containing polyanilines

Electrorheological fluids which exhibit good high temperature performance are made using as the disperse phase a salt of a polymer of an alkenyl substituted aromatic comonomer such as styrene and a maleic acid comonomer or derivative thereof.

Polymeric salts as dispersed particles in electrorheological fluids

Non-aqueous electrorheological fluids are described which comprise a major amount of a hydrophobic liquid phase and a minor amount of a dispersed particulate phase comprising conductive polymers selected from the group consisting of polypyrroles, polyphenylenes, polyacetylenes, polyvinylpyridines, polyvinylpyrrolidones, poly(substituted anilines), polyvinylidene halides, polyphenothiazines and polyimidazoles. The electrorheological fluids prepared in accordance with the present invention are useful in a variety of applications including flotational coupling devices such as clutches for automobiles or industrial motors, transmissions, brakes or tension control devices; and linear damping devices such as shock absorbers, engine mounts and hydraulic actuators.

Electrorheological fluids containing eletronically conductive polymers

A composition is disclosed which comprises: (A) a compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein Ar.sup.1 and Ar.sup.2 are independently mononuclear or polynuclear, substituted or unsubstituted aromatic groups; R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently hydrogen or hydrocarbyl groups of from 1 to about 25 carbon atoms; X is at least one divalent sulfur atom, sulfone group, sulfixide group, or a mixture thereof; and n is a number ranging from 1 to about 5; and (B) a compound represented by the formula ##STR2## wherein Ar.sup.3 and Ar.sup.4 are independently mononuclear or polynuclear, substituted or unsubstituted aromatic groups; and R.sup.5 is hydrogen, halogen, OH, NH.sub.2, SH, NO.sub.2 or a hydrocarbyl group of from 1 to about 50 carbon atoms. Concentrates, lubricants, functional fluids, fuels, aqueous compositions and emulsions comprising the foregoing compositions are also disclosed.
