A word processing system in which text can be displayed on a display device and audio recording and playback means is provided to permit a user to record an audio message includes means for monitoring the volume level of speaking by the user and means for notifying the user if the volume level of the speaking by the user is too high or too low. Also, the system allows the user to pause and resume during recording and playback without requiring re-recording or re-playback of the entire message.

System for facilitating the control of audio information within a word

A system for automatically adjusting text codes and control codes stored in a memory into text blocks having variable formatting parameters and variable line counts. The detection of a code signal causes the system to enter a non-playout adjust mode. The operator is then prompted to enter a line count for the text block to be formatted. After the line count is entered, the system proceeds to adjust in memory the number of lines of text equal to the line count to the predetermined formatting parameters with no external output of the text. An interrupt of the adjust mode occurs upon the detection of any one of a number of predefined special conditions including the end of text, mode-measure codes in memory, special codes (e.g. stop, edit, error, page end), hyphenation requests, forced line overflow, or upon completion of the text block line count. The system presents to the operator visual indicators upon the occurrence of an interrupt sufficient to define the cause of the interrupt and the location in text where the special condition occurred. During the interrupt, the operator may enter information into the system or play out codes from memory, and then enter a code signal that causes the system to continue in the non-playout adjust mode.

Selective formatting of blocks of text codes in a memory of a word

A method and apparatus associated with word processing equipment for producing a preliminary printout of accessible lines of intermixed text characters and code characters representative of the format of such text. The apparatus includes logic controlled gates for selectively gating text codes, instruction codes, and reference line number codes to a print control coupled to, and controlling the printing by, a printer. Specific networks enable the printing of 'font change' instructions and identifications and characteristic identifier symbols indicative of the presence of an instruction code. Audit print codes representing material ones of the instruction codes are substituted for the usual printer functional response to those instruction codes, that is, a code representation of the instruction code is printed instead of the printer executing the instruction.

Apparatus for producing preliminary character printout of text and

A control system for randomly accessing the contents of a recirculating shift register memory under the control of a processor. The processor provides to the control system an address equivalent to the number of positions the operating point (defined by an operating flag) is to be moved in the shift register memory to access the information desired by the processor. The control system decodes the address, removes the operating flag from the memory character stream and reinserts the operating flag in the memory at the point desired by the processor during a single revolution of the memory.
