A solvent cement for bonding PVC, CPVC and ABS plastic pipe and other molded articles comprises a minor amount of an acrylic resin and one or more solvents capable of dissolving the acrylic resin and further capable of dissolving at least the surfaces of PVC, CPVC and ABS molded articles, wherein the acrylic resin constitutes at least 75 wt. % of the dissolved thermoplastic resin in the cement.

Adhesive compositions are described which comprise at least one organic sulfoxide, sulfone or sulfide and at least one ketone, ether, ester, amide or carbonate or a mixture thereof. Process for making low density chlorinated polyvinyl chloride foam

This invention relates to the suspension polymerization of vinyl halides and vinylidene halides in an aqueous medium to make polymers and copolymers which are designed for use in making plastisols. The process is conducted in an aqueous medium using a free-radical yielding catalyst, and in the presence of a hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate (polyvinyl alcohol) having a degree of hydrolysis in the range of about 65% to about 85% and a compound having a hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) less than about 3.5. The important aspect of the present new process is the use of agitation ramping, that is, changing the degree of agitation during the course of the reaction, and adding the catalyst to the reaction medium after the same has reached the reaction temperature whereby these are produced polymer particles which are dense spherical glassy beads having an average diameter in the range of about 10 to about 100 microns. The suspension resins so produced are easily and uniformly mixed with a plasticizer to form plastisols which are stable, containing particles of uniform and proper size, and capable of producing films, and like products, of good clarity.

There is disclosed a process for producing vinyl dispersion resins by means of the emulsion polymerization technique. The vinyl monomer or monomers are reacted in an aqueous medium using a water-insoluble free radical yielding catalyst, an emulsifier or emulsifier system and a small amount of water-insoluble plasticizer whereby the amount of emulsifier(s) necessary is greatly reduced. All the reaction ingredients are thoroughly mixed and homogenized prior to polymerization at a temperature of about 30.degree. C. to about 70.degree. C. The paste resins so produced have improved properties, such as foam properties, and polymer buildup in the reactor is reduced.

Emulsion polymerization process with low emulsifier concentration

This invention relates to a process for polymerizing vinyl monomers by the emulsion polymerization technique using a new emulsifier system to produce latices or paste resins which have improved plastisol bloom properties and with little or no polymer buildup in the reactor. The polymerization process is conducted in an aqueous medium using a free radical producing polymerization catalyst in the presence of an emulsifier system comprising a sulfonated type soap selected from sulfonated phthalates and sulfonated benzoates.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing vinyl dispersion resins by conducting the polymerization reaction of the vinyl monomer or monomers in an aqueous alkaline medium, using an oil-soluble polymerization initiator, at temperatures preferably below about 48.degree. C., in the presence of an emulsifier system comprising the ammonium salt of a high fatty acid containing from 8 to 20 carbon atoms, at least one long straight chain alcohol containing from 14 to 24 carbon atoms, and a sulfate or sulfonate type soap of C.sub.12 to C.sub.20 alkyl or aryl hydrocarbons, wherein the ratio of alcohol to emulsifier is equal to or greater than 1.0 and wherein the reaction ingredients are thoroughly mixed, and preferably homogenized, prior to polymerization. The process produces paste resins having improved plastisol foam properties, especially when sodium metabisulfite is added to the polymer recipe or the polymer slurry prior to spray drying. Further, polymer buildup in the reactor is substantially reduced and multiple polymerizations can be run in the reactor without opening the same.
