A section mill including a housing, a cutter pivotally connected to the housing, a drive piston operably connected to the cutter to radially expand or retract the cutter depending upon longitudinal position of the drive piston relative to the housing, and a limit configuration in operable contact with the drive piston to limit drive piston stroke responsive to hydraulic pressure on the drive piston. A method for cutting casing including determining condition of a structure radially outward of a casing to be cut, selecting an amount of expansion of a cutter based upon the determining, and cutting the casing. A borehole system including a borehole in a subsurface formation, a string in the borehole, and a section mill as in any prior embodiment disposed in the borehole.

Intelligent section mill, method, and system

A downhole tool for applying a force to a component in a borehole penetrating a subsurface formation includes an acoustic transducer configured to receive an acoustic signal. The tool also includes a spring having a spring force, a spring force retention device defining a perimeter having a gap and in mechanical communication with the component where the spring force retention device being configured to retain the spring force, and a gap member configured to be disposed in the gap. The tool further includes a force generator coupled to the gap member and in operable communication with the acoustic receiver and configured to operate in response to receiving the acoustic signal to withdraw the gap member from the gap to cause the spring force retention device to release the spring force thereby applying the spring force to the component.

Remotely-activated liner hanger and running tool

A downhole tool including a mandrel, at least one moveable component mounted to the mandrel, and a locking ring mounted to the mandrel. The locking ring includes a plurality of locking ring segments that enable relative movement between the mandrel and the at least one moveable component. A plurality of circumferential spaces is arranged between corresponding ones of the locking ring segments. At least one load bar is arranged in at least one of the plurality of circumferential spaces. The at least one load bar is mechanically connected to the at least one moveable component.

Top set liner hanger and packer with hanger slips above the packer seal

A system of tubulars includes a non-expandable mandrel having a body including an uphole end, a downhole end, and an outer surface. The non-expandable mandrel includes one or more slip members that are outwardly extendable relative to the outer surface. A seal assembly is arranged at the downhole end of the non-expandable mandrel. The seal assembly is settable after outward expansion of the one or more slip members.

A liner hanger has slips held by a slip body. A potential energy force to move the slips axially when the hanger is in position is selectively released. The slips move axially and radially outwardly guided on opposed edges by the slip body. The slip faces have wickers that dig into the surrounding casing that will support a liner string off the slips. Weight is set down to bring the housing into contact with the top of the slips that are already engaged to the surrounding casing. The nature of the loading between the slips and the casing changes from a radial reaction force from the casing going into the slip and then distributed circumferentially to the slip housing to an essentially axial loading of the slip housing down onto the slip that has penetrated the casing with an opposite reaction force in the casing wall.

The nature of the loading between the slips and the casing changes from a radial reaction force from the casing going into the slip and then distributed circumferentially to the slip housing to an essentially axial loading of the slip housing down onto the slip that has penetrated the casing with an opposite reaction force in the casing wall. The contact location between the slip housing and the slip is made broader at the slip end with a wider portion having an undercut to reduce contact stress and to aid in promoting flow past the set slip. The slip housing also has axial flow channels that interact with the undercut to promote flow past the set slips.

A downhole seal assembly includes a body extending from an uphole end to a downhole end. The body includes a first sealing surface and an opposing, second sealing surface that is angled relative to the first sealing surface. A first void is formed in the second sealing surface adjacent the uphole end, and a seal is arranged in the first void. A second void is formed in the second sealing surface adjacent the downhole end. One or more passages is formed in the downhole end and fluidically coupled to the second void. The one or more passages is configured and disposed to guide downhole fluids into the second void forcing the first sealing surface against a wellbore.
