Techniques for detecting the presence of a tag are described. According to one aspect of the present invention, a plurality of devices are deployed around an establishment, each of the devices is executing a client module to communicate with a server and receive a broadcast from a tag attached to an object (e.g., a human being or an item). As the object approaches to a device, the broadcast from the tag is received by a device that reports to the server. As a result, the server executing a server module can determine a movement trajectory of the object from those devices that have received the broadcast from the tag. One embodiment of the present invention can be used to track an asset or facilitate a location-based service to a user wearing the tag.

Method and system for determining locations of tags

An apparatus is described to provide multi-channel bulk optical power detection. The apparatus has a plurality of optical splitters coupled to respective fiber-optic lines of a plurality of fiber-optic lines. An optimal time-division multiplexer has an input coupled to the plurality of optical splitters. A photodetector is coupled to an output of the optical time-division multiplexer to provide bulk optical power detection. The optical time-division multiplexer includes a scanning mirror.

Method and apparatus to provide multi-channel bulk fiber optical power detection

An optical switch fabric with an input stage, an output stage, and a center stage coupled in a cascaded manner. The center stage includes (1) a minimum number of center switches greater than one that cause the optical switch fabric to be strict-sense nonblocking and (2) at least one additional center switch to provide redundancy for the optical switch fabric. A module is described that includes optical input and output switches coupled to an optical center stage of an optical switch fabric. The module includes an interior cavity that contains free space beams from both the optical input switch and the optical output switch. A method is described for reconfiguring a redundant optical switch into a multilevel optical switch without interrupting operation of the signals carried by the optical switch by adding additional switch components and reconfiguring the fiber interconnection between switch elements.

An optical switch embodiment includes a switching array of arranged to accomplish switching of input light beams to any of a plurality of output channels and an array of beam monitoring elements for indirectly measuring and providing information used for adjusting output beams. The beam monitoring element further includes means for measuring the angular misalignment and the positional misalignment of a monitor beam and adjusting the reflectors based on monitor beam information such that optical beams are output from the switch having the desired optical characteristics, such as optimized power. Another optical switch embodiment includes an array of rhomboid prism assemblies positioned to receive the output beams from the switching array and such that the beams are split into substantially parallel working and monitor beams. Whereby the working beams pass into the plurality of output channels and the monitor beams pass into the plurality of beam monitoring elements where they are measured to provide information for adjusting the angular misalignment and the positional misalignment of the working beam.

Method and apparatus for indirect adjustment of optical switch reflectors

A micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) mirror device and methods for fabricating the same allow for a large range of angular motion for a center mirror component. The large range of angular motion for a center mirror component is dictated simply by a thickness of a substrate used or a thickness of a thick film used in making a support structure to support the center mirror component. The MEMS mirror device and methods for fabricating the same allow a large number mirror devices to be fabricated on a substrate. The MEMS mirror device includes a substrate. Electrodes are formed supported by the substrate. A support structure is formed adjacent to the electrodes. A hinge pattern and a mirror pattern having a center mirror component are formed such that the support structure supports the hinge pattern and mirror pattern. The support structure also supports the hinge pattern and mirror pattern such that a bottom surface of the center mirror component in a stationary non-rotating position is capable of exceeding a height of 50 &mgr;m above the electrodes.

Micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) mirror device and methods for fabricating the same

A data communications network consists of a number of interconnected nodes and a network station having a memory. The memory stores a data base containing predefined circuit provisioning information for a number of users. A user accesses the frame relay network by dialing into the network via an ISDN connection. When the user calls into the network, signaling information is received at a first node of the network and passed to the network station. The signaling information includes automatic number identification (ANI) information which identifies the calling user. The network station uses the ANI to index the data base and retrieve associated circuit provisioning information. The circuit provisioning information is used to automatically install a circuit according to the predefined information. In this way, the user is provided with dial access to the frame relay network.

A data communications system consists of a number of interconnected nodes forming a frame relay network. A user accesses the network by dialing in via a dial access server (DAS). The DAS-to-frame relay interface supports CCITT Recommundation Q.931 protocols for call control. A data link connection identifier (DLCI) for use in the DAS-to-frame relay network interface is provided in a Q.931 call establishment message.

An asynchronous transfer mode inverse multiplexed communication system is disclosed wherein a series of communication cells are multiplexed over a set of communication links. Each communication cell includes a framing bit of a predetermined framing bit stream for each communication link and a control channel bit of a control message for each communication link. Inbound communication cells from each communication link are aligned according to the corresponding framing bit stream. The control message specifies an ordered list of logical identifiers to indicate a multiplexed sequence of transfer of the communication cells over the communication links.

A frame based traffic policing system that determines if incoming data cells are conforming or non-conforming according to the a traffic contract. The frame based traffic policing system first detects a cell at the beginning or end of a frame and determines if the frame conforms with a traffic contract. If the cell does not exceed the parameters of the traffic contract, then the frame based traffic policing system deems the cell as conforming. If the cell was the first cell of a frame, then frame based traffic policing system treats all the remaining cells in the frame as conforming or non-conforming depending upon if the first data cell was conforming or non-conforming. If the cell was the last cell of a frame, then frame based traffic policing system treats all the cells of the following frame as conforming or non-conforming depending upon if the last cell of a previous frame was conforming or non-conforming. In this manner, all the data cells are from the same frame receive the same treatment by the network. The frame based traffic policing system improves the throughout of the network since the network will be less likely to waste resources transmitting cells from a corrupted frame.

To simplify the service decision made in a queue based digital switch, a method and apparatus is introduced that makes service decisions based upon the history of incoming cells. The apparatus includes a minimum service rate circuit that monitors the rate of arriving cells. The minimum service rate circuit tests the arriving cells to determine if they are in conformance with the minimum service rate of a service contract. The minimum service rate circuit may use a continuous state leaky bucket algorithm as specified in the CCITT Recommendation I.371 document, dated 1992, to determine if a cell is in conformance with the minimum service rate of the service contract. When a cell arrives that conforms to the minimum service rate, the minimum service rate circuit notifies the server and the server serves the queue associated with the connection.

A method and apparatus for exchanging communication cells in a communication controller, wherein an arbiter determines transmission requests for each of a plurality of communication modules in the communication controller. Each communication module has a transmit signal line and a receive signal line coupled to a switching circuit in the communication controller. The arbiter selectively couples the transmit signal lines to the receive signal lines according to the transmission requests. The communication modules transmit communication cells through the switching circuit, while the arbiter determines new transmission requests from each communication module.
