Fluorescent compounds which are conjugates of a biologically active moiety and an arylidene dye moiety. The compounds have a large Stokes shift and are useful in applications such as biological diagnostic elements.

There are disclosed diffusion transfer color processes and products which employ novel image dye-providing materials which provide image dyes having the chromophoric system represented by the formula ##STR1## X is H, alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; W is H or alkyl, R is H or alkyl; m and n are each integers of from 2 to 6. The image dye-providing material includes a diffusion control moiety such as a hydroquinonyl group and may be diffusible or nondiffusible as a function of the diffusion control moiety.

Image dye-providing materials

A class of quaternary nitrogen-containing polymeric materials, which upon contact with alkali provide substantial light-absorbing or opacifying properties, is disclosed. The polymeric materials comprise repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein the cyclic quaternary nitrogen-containing moiety is a 2-, 3-, or 4-pyridinium moiety; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, halo, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together comprise the atoms necessary to complete a six-membered, substituted or unsubstituted benzenoid ring; R.sup.3 is hydrogen or alkyl; X is an anion; and Y is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or halo.

There are described novel dye compounds which are represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein A is ##STR2## X is H, alkyl, aryl such as phenyl or naphthyl, or substituted aryl; W is H or alkyl; R is H or alkyl; Z and Y are each H or monovalent radicals; l and p are each 1 or 2 and m and n are each integers of from 2-6.

Diffusion transfer color processes and products are disclosed employing image-dye providing materials providing magenta image dyes having the chromophoric system represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein each R is the same or different and is an alkyl group, and each X is the same or different and is hydrogen or an alkyl group (including substituted alkyl). The dye image-providing material includes a diffusion control moiety, such as a hydroquinonyl group, and may be diffusible or nondiffusible as a function of the diffusion control moiety.

The present invention is concerned with novel xanthene compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl, which compounds are useful in photographic products and processes.

In one embodiment, the present invention is concerned with novel xanthene compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is ##STR2## wherein R' is alkyl; Y is an electron-withdrawing group and A is an anion. In another embodiment, the present invention is concerned with photographic products and processes employing these xanthene compounds.
