In an improved method of etching apertures in a thin metal sheet to form a shadow mask for a color picture tube, the metal sheet has a first acid-resistant stencil on one major surface thereof and a second acid-resistant stencil on the other major surface thereof. At least one of the stencils has openings therein at locations of intended apertures. The improvement comprises the steps of magnetically holding the metal sheet with a flat magnetic assembly, and moving the magnetic assembly magnetically holding the metal sheet thereon through an etching chamber. The magnetic assembly includes a magnetic layer that is supported on an acid-resistant board.

In accordance with the present invention, a display apparatus 8 comprises a color CRT 10 having an evacuated envelope 11 with a faceplate panel 12 sealed to one end of a funnel 15 that is closed at the other end by a neck 14. The faceplate panel has a luminescent screen 22 on an interior surface thereof. A shadow mask 25 is located in proximity to the screen. The shadow mask comprises a metal sheet having a central portion and an exterior portion with a plurality of apertures 40, 43 therethrough. An electron gun 26 is disposed within the neck for generating and directing electron beams 28 toward the screen. A deflection yoke 30 is disposed around the envelope at the junction of the neck and the funnel. The yoke deflects the beams to scan a raster across the screen. The display apparatus is improved other prior devices in that the apertures 43 in the exterior portion of the mask, on the screen-facing side thereof, have openings 45 that are elongated in the direction of the incident electron beams and offset relative to the corresponding openings 44 on the electron gun-facing side of the mask. In accordance with the present invention, an apparatus for developing a latent image formed on a photoreceptor, which is deposited on an interior surface of an output window of a display device, is disclosed. The developing apparatus includes a developing chamber, having a support surface for supporting the output window, a screen structure material reservoir for storing, deagglomerating and feeding the screen structure material, and a triboelectric gun assembly communicating with the reservoir. The gun assembly triboelectric charges and imparts a desired charge polarity to the screen structure material. The gun assembly further includes at least one material dispersing nozzle spaced from the support surface for distributing the charged material for deposition onto the latent image.

In accordance with the present invention, a method of electro-photographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly for a color CRT 10 on an interior surface of a faceplate panel 12 is described. A volatilizable, organic conductive (OC) layer 32 is provided on the interior surface of the panel and a volatilizable, organic photoconductive (OPC) layer 34 overlies the OC layer. The method includes the steps of: establishing a substantially uniform electrostatic charge on the OPC layer; exposing selected areas of the OPC layer to visible light to affect the charge thereon; developing the selected areas of the OPC layer with a triboelectrically charged dry-powdered, screen structure materials; fixing the screen structure materials to the underlying OPC layer with a suitable fixative; filming the screen structure materials; aluminizing the screen; and baking the aluminized screen. The present method is an improvement over prior methods because the relative humidity (RH) during the charging step is maintained above a humidity level below which the performance of the OC layer is negatively impacted by a reduction in its ion transfer mobility which makes it difficult to apply a usable corona charge to the overlying OPC layer, and below a humidity level above which the OC layer swells causing cracking in the OPC layer. Additionally, the RH during the development step is maintained below a humidity above which the screen structure materials can absorb water and macro-agglomerate, thereby changing the charge-to-mass ration of the screen structure materials to a value which adversely affects the deposition thereof.

The method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent screen on a substrate of a color CRT, according to the present invention, includes the steps of forming a photoreceptor by sequentially coating the substrate to form a conductive layer and an overcoating of a photoconductive layer, establishing an electrostatic charge on the photoconductive layer, and exposing selected areas of the photoconductive layer to visible light to affect the charge thereon. Then the photoconductive layer is developed by the application of suitable triboelectrically charged, dry-powdered screen structure materials. The improved process provides at least one wear-resistant, conductive contact patch on a peripheral portion of a surface of the substrate. The contact patch has a first portion which underlies at least one of the layers of the photoreceptor and is in electrical contact with the conductive layer, and a second portion which extends from the photoreceptor. The contact patch is utilized during the manufacturing process to electrically ground the conductive layer during charging of the photoconductive layer. The contact patch also is utilized to measure the charge on the photoconductive layer during the developing process. Additionally, the contact patch provides an electrical contact, in the finished tube, between an aluminized layer on the screen and at least one support for a shadow mask.

A method and apparatus for exposing a layer of photoresist on a sheet includes positioning the sheet in a vacuum printing frame comprising a glass photographic printing plate carrying an opaque master pattern of metal or metal oxide on a central area of the printing plate. A light transmissive rubbery material is patterned in such a fashion as to overlie the opaque portions of the master pattern and provide a continuous path between the islands overlying the opaque master pattern. The rubbery material also extends in the peripheral area of the photographic printing plate and a plurality of mesas separated by channels are formed in this peripheral area. The channels have a width substantially greater than the path width formed between adjacent islands of rubbery material overlying the opaque portions of the pattern. The peripheral channels facilitate the evacuation of the plate and reduce evacuation time. The mesas of rubbery material in the peripheral area of the plate through which the channels are formed act as supports to space the printing plate from the resist coating on the metal sheet so that evacuation of the space between the printing plate and the sheet can be achieved without having the printing plate either be sealed-off by the metal sheet or by a second printing plate which is located on the opposite side of the metal sheet.

A method for exposing a layer of photoresist on a sheet includes positioning the sheet in a vacuum printing frame comprising a glass plate carrying an opaque master pattern of metal or metal oxide. With the pattern opposite the coating, the frame is evacuated and the layer is exposed. The pattern has a substantially-uniform thickness in the range of about 0.5.+-.0.2 micrometer. To reduce the times for evacuating and devacuating the frame, the pattern side of the glass plate carries an array of light-transparent islands up to about 3.0-micrometer thick.
