A drilling assembly () comprises upper () and lower () drill strings with a fluid passage () therethrough for distributing fluid to a bottom hole assembly (). The upper drill string () has an upper end () connectable to a drilling apparatus () and fluid source () and a lower end () with an attached casing expander unit () that communicates the fluid passage () of the upper () and lower () drill strings. An upper end () of the lower drill string () is formed from a casing string () telescoped over the casing expander unit. A constriction () connects the casing string () with the rest of the lower drill string (). A flow restriction device () in the lower drill string acts to control fluid flow through the fluid passage. In use, the flow restriction device creates a pressure in the fluid passage that acts at the constriction to advance the lower drill string past the upper drill string while simultaneously expanding the portion of the casing string moving past the expander unit.

Combined casing expansion/casing while drilling method and apparatus

A downhole drilling assembly including a housing having an upper end for connection to a drill string and a lower end, a fluid passage extending through the housing from the upper end to the lower end, a power unit contained within the housing, a drive assembly extending within the housing between the power unit and the lower end of the housing such that a mandrel chamber is defined between the drive assembly and the housing, a radially movable first stabilizer associated with the housing and located between the power unit and the lower end of the housing, an axially movable mandrel contained within the mandrel chamber, the mandrel being associated with a stabilizer actuator for causing radial movement of the first stabilizer in response to axial movement of the mandrel, and a sensor apparatus located between the power unit and the lower end of the housing for sensing at least one drilling parameter. The drilling assembly may also include a second stabilizer located between the power unit and the lower end of the housing and a bent housing assembly located between the power unit and the lower end of the housing.

Adjustable gauge downhole drilling assembly

A downhole drilling assembly including a housing having an upper end for connection to a drill string and a lower end, a fluid passage extending through the housing from the upper end to the lower end, a power unit contained within the housing, a drive assembly extending within the housing between the power unit and the lower end of the housing such that a mandrel chamber is defined between the drive assembly and the housing, a radially movable stabilizer associated with the housing, and an axially movable mandrel contained within the mandrel chamber, the mandrel being associated with a stabilizer actuator for causing radial movement of the stabilizer in response to axial movement of the mandrel.

Apparatus for the cleaning of the exterior surface of a pipeline or the like includes a frame defining a longitudinal passage of a size sufficient to permit the pipeline to extend longitudinally therethrough. A first cleaning unit and a second cleaning unit are mounted on the frame. Each cleaning unit includes a plurality of jet modules. In turn, each jet module includes a rotatable jet nozzle mounted to deliver a jet of cleaning liquid toward the pipeline exterior surface. A high pressure cleaning liquid source is also provided and is connected to the rotatable jet nozzles to provide high pressure cleaning liquid to the nozzles.

Cleaning of the exterior surface of a pipeline to remove coatings

A plurality of liquid jet nozzles are positioned in spaced apart relation to each other about a portion of the exterior surface of a pipe to be cleaned. High pressure liquid is supplied to the nozzles to cause liquid jets to be emitted, with the liquid jets being directed toward the exterior surface of the pipe. Each nozzle can be rotated about an axis which is at least substantially normal to the exterior surface of the pipe, while the nozzles are being moved longitudinally relative to the pipe. The liquid jets from the nozzles simultaneously impinge on the exterior surface of the pipe along prescribed paths located in an annular region extending around the circumferential extent of the pipe. Each of the prescribed paths is in the form of continuous convolutions, and the prescribed paths together extend around the full circumferential extent of the pipe while the annular region travels longitudinally relative to the pipe, whereby cleaning of the exterior surface of the pipe can be affected by a single longitudinal pass of the annular region.

Hydrocleaning of the exterior surface of a pipeline to remove coatings

Hydrocleaning apparatus for pipelines and the like includes a frame capable of advancing lengthwise of the pipeline, such frame carrying a plurality of liquid jetting modules which, in use, are disposed in an array around the pipeline surface to enable cleaning of the entire surface to be effected. The frame can be opened of the entire surface to be effected. The frame can be opened up to allow the apparatus to be fitted to or removed from a continuous pipeline. The frame arrangement and module mounting system are designed to provide good cleaning efficiency and proper orientation of the various modules in spite of pipeline irregularities including out-of-round conditions, uneven coating thicknesses and wrinkles. A pivoting module mount helps to maintain cleaning efficiency in the case where thick coatings are being removed. The frame drive wheels are disposed forwardly of the modules to avoid contamination of the cleaned surfaces by deposits that may build up on the wheels. A shroud system connected to the modules prevents substantial escape of contaminating liquids and debris into the environment.

Apparatus for the hydrocleaning of the exterior surface of a pipeline or the like includes a frame adapted to surround a portion of a pipeline and defining a longitudinal passage through which, in use, the pipeline extends. A plurality of liquid jet nozzles are mounted to the frame in spaced apart relation so as to surround, in use, said pipeline in circumferentially spaced apart relationship to one another with each nozzle in spaced relation to the pipeline exterior surface. Means for supplying high pressure liquid to the nozzles to cause liquid jets to be emitted from the nozzles are provided. The nozzles and the frame are adapted to move relative to the pipeline surface when in operation such that (i) the liquid jets from the nozzles impinge on the pipeline surface along prescribed paths located in an annular region extending around substantially the full circumferential extent of the pipeline and (ii) the annular region travels longitudinally relative to the pipeline to effect cleaning of the pipeline exterior surface. In one form of the machine the frame 'opens' up to permit installation on an 'in situ' pipeline.
