A method for preparing a substrate having an adherent, durable, flexible, and stain resistant layer. The layer is formed by applying a composition that includes (i) the reaction product of a polyester and a polyoxetane having at least one carboxylic acid end group and at least one pendant &#x2014;CH&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;Rf group and (ii) an amino resin curative. The substrate may be printed or embossed or both. The coated substrate has both stain resistant properties and dry erase properties.

A fluorine containing polymer which acts as a wetting, flow or leveling agent, and has at least one polar group. The polymer has at least one pendant or ether side chain containing from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms with at least 25% of the hydrogen atoms being replaced by fluorine atoms. The fluorinated polymers unexpectedly impart wetting, flow or leveling properties to a variety of coatings while producing little foam.

Polymeric surfactants derived from cyclic monomers having pendant fluorinated carbon groups

A composition comprises an oxetane oligomer or polymer or copolymer block wherein each repeat group has at least one ether side chain which is terminated by a fluorinated aliphatic group and optionally with the proviso that at least two different repeat units of the oligomer or polymer or copolymer have different Rgroups. The oxetane block is connected to a hydrocarbon polymer block derived from a mono or polyhydroxyl initiator. The terminal fluorinated alkyl groups impart good stain resistance to the oligomer or polymer or copolymer. In another embodiment, a fluorinated aliphatic or alkyl alcohol is reacted with an amino dicarboxylic acid with the reaction product thereof being subsequently grafted to a maleated polyolefin or a maleated polymer derived from a vinyl substituted aromatic monomer. The fluorinated alcohol also imparts good stain resistance to the grafted copolymer. Both compounds can be utilized as an additive in polymers as for example various polyolefins.

The polymer of the present invention is derived from cyclic ether monomers, dioxane, dioxalane or trioxane and contains both pendant R fluoro groups as well as polar groups. These polymers have good wetting, or flow, or leveling properties. They can be reacted with other monomers, such as in the preparation of polyesters, and can be used in waxes, polishes and coatings.

Nanocomposite compositions comprising organically modified clays and polyolefins or copolymers containing repeat units derived from olefins have flame retardant or flame resistant properties. Sheets and laminates of the nanocomposite can be utilized wherever flame retardant properties are desired.

A liquid thermoset coating is described for application on and near surfaces of molded plastic parts where the resin rich phase has been disturbed or imperfectly formed. The coating has been found to be effective at minimizing paint pops and craters in subsequent finish coatings on said parts. Said paint pops and craters develop during heated cure cycles for the finish coatings. The coating which is applied to the heated part and subsequently cured is preferably an epoxy composition of low viscosity. The molded plastic parts are preferably fiber reinforced thermoset polyester parts with an in-mold coating to improve surface quality.

Coating compositions are disclosed which use a polyoxetane polymer having CH.sub.2 --O---CH.sub.2 --R.sub.f side chains where R.sub.f is a highly fluorinated alkyl or polyether. The coating compositions use polyisocyanates to create isocyanate terminated polymers from the poly(oxetanes) and from various polyols from alkylene oxides or polyester polyols. These can be reacted together to form block copolymer structures or can be linked together when the coating is crosslinked. A preferred method is to use blocked isocyanate groups. Another preferred embodiment is to use the composition as a abrasion resistant coating for glass run channels.

This invention relates to a method of sealing the porous surfaces that can be generated during the manufacturing and processing of molded plastic parts. Liquid thermoset coatings are applied to preheated parts and cured to create a barrier on the surface to gasses generated during heat curing of subsequently applied surface coatings. The liquid coating may be comprised of polyurethane forming components; those components in combination with unsaturated polyester resins; vinyl ester resin compositions; coatings derived from hydroxyl or carboxyl containing oligomers reacted with alkylated urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, and/or benzoquanamine-formaldehyde resins; and oligomers containing carboxyls reacted with triglycidyl isocyanurate.

Liquid thermoset sealers and sealing process for molded plastics

A primerless, one-part, heat curable, low volatile organic compound, polyurethane composition comprises a blocked polyurethane prepolymer made from a liquid hydroxyl terminated intermediate and an excess of a polyisocyanate, a curing agent, silicone and/or low friction polymer and optional fillers. Upon cure of the polyurethane composition, the silicone oil and/or low friction polymer generally imparts low friction and high abrasive resistant properties. A desired use is as a glass run channel coating.
