In liquid ring pumps having conical port members, cavitation and associated operating noise are reduced by providing a second subsidiary discharge port beyond the closing edge of the main discharge port in the direction of rotor rotation.

Noise control for conically ported liquid ring pumps

A liquid ring pump with a conical or cylindrical port member has a vent-recirculation port in the port member in addition to the conventional intake and discharge ports. The vent-recirculation port communicates with the compression zone of the pump and is connected to a reservoir of pumping liquid maintained in the discharge portion of the pump head. When the pump is operating at relatively low compression ratios, the vent-recirculation port acts as a vent to prevent overcompression of the gas in the pump. At relatively high compression ratios, the vent-recirculation port recirculates pumping liquid from the reservoir, thereby increasing the maximum attainable compression ratio.

Liquid ring pump with conical or cylindrical port member

A liquid ring pump having at least two discharge port portions communicating respectively with relatively low and relatively high pressure portions of the compression zone in the pump, and a discharge chamber communicating with the discharge port portions for causing excess pumping liquid discharged from the discharge port to flow transversely over the discharge port portion communicating with the relatively low pressure portion of the compression zone.
