A cylinder head having an exhaust valve port comprising a throat defined by a wall of substantially circular cross section and a bevelled valve seat circumscribing the wall. The bevelled valve seat has an axially extending annular portion adapted to be engaged by a valve head to close the port, the bevelled valve seat extending axially outwardly from the axis of the throat at an angle to the wall. The improvement comprises the application of a small wall diverter within the exhaust port to force separation of the high temperature exhaust gas stream from the exhaust valve seat when the valve is open.

Engine exhaust valve cooling

A rotary engine employing an improved circumferential flow cooling system is employed to provide an increase in fuel economy and engine efficiency. Each housing unit has its own distinct flow circuit with the total volume of cooling medium being variably distributed among such units. The circuits employ flow foils, flow turbulizers, velocity variation and a variable epitrochoid wall thickness to provide flow characteristics which vary along the stations of the circuit. The variations promote a more uniform engine wall temperature throughout, the coolant can be operated at a higher overall temperature, and heat is transferred (extracted or injected) on a programmed basis along the flow circuit as needed.

Water cooling system - Wankel engine

A method of programming exhaust gas constituents is disclosed which cooperates with a unique exhaust passage liner construction resulting in an improved self-cleaning technique for internal combustion engines. The liner comprises an apparatus which preferably subdivides the outer peripheral region of the exhaust so that the Reynolds number of the outer flow is below 2300 and therefore indicative of laminar or controlled turbulent flow. The laminar transient film between the passage wall and flow is enhanced by the transient film between subdividing walls and the flow, the composite acting to reduce the heat transfer coefficient between the total flow and wall of the exhaust passage.

Exhaust heat conservation

A rotary internal combustion engine is disclosed having circumferential type cooling circuit for the rotor housing and a plurality of spark plugs extending through the trochoid wall of the rotor housing at a vertically rising zone of said circuit. The plugs are contained by bosses extending through the coolant flow passage; the bosses are arranged to stagger the up-stream sides of said bosses with respect to controlled flow of coolant thereabout, thereby increasing flow control, increasing heat transfer, and preventing a collection of vapor which may act as an insulation film hindering heat transfer between said bosses and coolant flow. The centerline of said bosses are preferably skewed with respect to both a plane bisecting the flow longitudinally and a plane bisecting the flow transversely, whereby the spark terminals of said plugs may be maintained within narrow offset limits on opposite sides of a centerline of the gas side of said trochoid wall.
