An optical device includes a ferroelectric liquid crystal material. This optical device has a first and a second substrate. A first alignment treatment is applied to a surface of the first substrate, the first alignment treatment being intended to induce an orientation of at least a portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material along a first alignment direction with a first pretilt angle &#x3b1;with respect to a plane parallel to the first substrate. A second alignment treatment is applied to a surface of the second substrate, the second alignment treatment being intended to induce an orientation of at least another portion of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material along a second alignment direction with a second pretilt angle &#x3b1;with respect to a plane parallel to the second substrate. The optical device further includes an arrangement for securing the first substrate with respect to the second substrate in such a way that the surfaces of the first and second substrates onto which the first and second alignment treatments were applied, respectively, are spaced apart, generally parallel and facing each other. In addition, a projection of the first alignment direction onto the treated surface of the first substrate makes a non-zero angle &#x3a9; with respect to a projection of the second alignment direction onto the treated surface of the first substrate such that, the ferroelectric liquid crystal material being injected between the first and second substrates, the optical device is free of chevron structures without a need to otherwise apply an additional treatment to the optical device.

A reflection mode, ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulating system, includes a light reflecting type spatial light modulator. The spatial light modulator has a light reflecting surface cooperating with a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchable between first and second states so as to act on light in different first and second ways, respectively. A switching arrangement switches the liquid crystal light modulating medium between the first and second states and an illumination arrangement produces a source of light. An optics arrangement is optically coupled the spatial light modulator and the illumination arrangement such that light is directed from the source of light into the spatial light modulator for reflection back out of the modulator and such that reflected light is directed from the spatial light modulator into a predetermined viewing area. The optics arrangement includes a passive quarter wave plate positioned in the optical path between the light source and the spatial light modulator and in the optical path between the spatial light modulator and the viewing area. A compensator cell is also positioned in the optical path between the light source and the spatial light modulator and in the optical path between the spatial light modulator and the viewing area. The compensator cell has a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchable between a primary and a secondary state so as to act on light in different primary and secondary ways, respectively.

A display system for acting on light entering the system includes a reflective ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator and a polarizer arrangement. The polarizer arrangement includes a polarizer for polarizing the light entering the system and directing the polarized light into the spatial light modulator along an optical path having an optical path axis. The reflective spatial light modulator acts on the polarized light to produce an optical output that is directed from the spatial light modulator back into the polarizing arrangement along substantially the same optical path axis that the polarized light is directed into the spatial light modulator. The polarizing arrangement also includes an analyzer configured to receive and analyze the optical output of the spatial light modulator and to direct the analyzed optical output out of the system. A compensator is positioned in the optical path between the polarizer of the polarizing arrangement and the spatial light modulator and in the optical path between the spatial light modulator and the analyzer. The compensator includes a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium switchable between a first compensator state and a second compensator state. The compensator is configured such that the compensator inverts the optical output of the spatial light modulator when the compensator is switched to the second state. The layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal light modulating medium of the compensator and the spatial light modulator having retardances that are substantially different than one another.
