Thermoplastic polyolefins (TPOs) and/or thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are blended with low molecular weight propylene-dominated copolymers to provide polymeric compositions with an improved balance between processability and toughness. The compositions have improved processability by facilitating the ease with which a TPO or TPV, usually difficult to melt process, can be processed at high line speeds, which in turn improves the formation of the composition into articles.

Propylene copolymers in soft thermoplastic blends

Low molecular weight semicrystalline propylene-alpha olefin copolymers containing propylene crystallinity are used as a nucleating agent in crystalline polypropylene and polypropylene copolymers. The nucleating copolymers are propylene-alpha olefin copolymers having a percent crystallinity of 5-75%, a melting point of 45&#xb0; C.-105&#xb0; C., and an MFR between 300 and 5000 g/10 min. Nucleated polypropylene compositions comprise a nucleating amount of the copolymer blended in a matrix of polypropylene homopolymer, or 0.01 to 9 wt % &#x3b1;-olefin copolymer, having a melting point greater than 110&#xb0; C. The nucleating copolymer improves processing time with little or no effect on the crystallinity-associated characteristics of the matrix. The invention also provides methods of crystallizing polypropylene with the nucleating agent and of forming articles with the composition, and also provides articles formed from the composition and/or by the method.

Isotactic polypropylene nucleation

Disclosed herein is an in-reactor produced multi-component copolymer comprises a semi-crystalline component having a crystallinity of 20% or more, and an amorphous component having a crystallinity of 5% or less. The copolymer comprises at least 80 wt % of units derived from propylene and from about 1 to about 20 wt % of units derived from at least one Cto Calpha-olefin. The copolymer has a viscosity at 190&#xb0; C. of at least 530 mPa sec and a heat of fusion between about 10 and about 70 J/g. An adhesive containing the copolymer exhibits a good balance of adhesive properties and mechanical strength.

Propylene copolymers for adhesive applications

This invention relates to an adhesive comprising an olefin polymer composition comprising a first amorphous polymer having a crystallinity of 5% or less, prepared with a first catalyst; and a second crystalline polymer, differing in chemical and physical properties from the first polymer, having a crystallinity of 20% or more, prepared with a second catalyst; and where the olefin polymer composition has a Dot T-Peel of 1 Newton or more on Kraft paper; an Mw of at least 7,000 to 80,000; a branching index (g') of from 0.4 to 0.90 measured at the Mz of the polymer composition; and a crystallinity of between 5 and 40%.

Disclosed herein are adhesives comprising a copolymer comprising at least 80 wt % of units derived from propylene and from about 1 to about 20 wt % of units derived from at least one Cto Calpha-olefin. The copolymer has a molecular weight of less than 100,000 and a heat of fusion between about 10 and about 70 J/g. An adhesive containing the copolymer preferably exhibits at least 50% fiber tear at &#x2212;18&#xb0; C. and at least 50% fiber tear at +25&#xb0; C. using Inland paper board as a substrate; a viscosity of less than 50,000 mPa sec at 190&#xb0; C., a set time of less than 4 seconds and a toughness of at least 3.4 megajoule/m.

The present invention describes polymer comprising one or more C3 to C40 olefins and having a Mw of 100,000 or less and a Dot T-Peel of 1 Newton or more. The polymer may have a branching index (g') of 0.95 or less measured at the Mz of the polymer, and a heat of fusion of 1 to 70 J/g. Also described are polymers of homopolypropylene or a copolymer of propylene and up to 5 mole % ethylene having: an isotactic run length of 1 to 30 as determined by Carbon 13 NMR and a percent of r dyad of greater than 20%, preferably from 20 to 70% as determined by Carbon 13 NMR. Also described are methods of making these and other polymers.

The packaging industry desires adhesive compositions having a fast set time, such as those setting in less than five seconds from a molten state at conventional packaging operating temperatures to a solid or quasi solid having favorable Dot T-Peel, set time, and/or fiber tear adhesion properties. Polymer based adhesives performing within this window are a favorable alternative to conventional formulated adhesives. The provided adhesive compositions exhibit a favorable balance of properties such as high adhesive strength, wide temperature operating window, and fast set time. Provided are adhesive compositions composed of a polyolefin composition comprising at least about 50 mol % polypropylene, at least one wax and at least one wax modifier.

Polyolefin adhesive compositions and method of making thereof

The present invention also discloses a heterogeneous blend composition comprising; a) from 1% to 99% by weight of the blend of a first polymer component comprising a copolymer of 5% to 35% by weight of the first polymer component consisting predominantly of alpha olefin derived units and 65% to 95% by weight of the first polymer component of propylene derived units having a crystallinity of 0.1% to about 25% from isotactic polypropylene sequences, a melting point of from 45&#xb0; C. to 105&#xb0; C., and wherein the Melt Flow Rate (MFR@230&#xb0; C.) of the first polymer component is between 300 g/10 min to 5000 g/10 min b) from 1% to 99% by weight of the blend of a second polymer component comprising isotactic polypropylene and random copolymers of isotactic propylene, wherein the percentage of the copolymerized alpha-olefin in the copolymer is between 0.0% and 9% by weight of the second polymer component and wherein the second polymer component has a melting point greater than about 110&#xb0; C., wherein the first polymer component has less than 1000 ppm of reaction products arising from the chemical reaction of a molecular degradation agent.

Soft heterogeneous isotactic polypropylene compositions

Embodiments of the present invention relate to article comprising 1) a functionalized component, 2) tackifier, and 3) an olefin polymer comprising one or more C3 to C40 olefins, optionally one or more diolefins, and less than 5 mole % of ethylene having a Dot T-Peel of 1 Newton or more, a branching index (g') of 0.95 or less measured at the Mz of the polymer; and an Mw of 100,000 or less; where the functional component is selected from the group consisting of functionalized polymers, functionalized oligomers and beta nucleating agents; and where the Gardner color of the adhesive does not change by more than 7 Gardner units when the adhesive has been heat aged at 180&#xb0; C. for 48 hours as compared to the Gardner color of the unaged composition.

Polyolefin adhesive compositions and articles made therefrom

The invention relates to a polymer blend prepared by the process of combining under polymerization conditions: (A) a first catalyst capable of producing a first crystalline polymer having an Mw of 100,000 or less, (B) a second catalyst capable of preparing a second amorphous polymer having an Mw of 100,000 or less and differing in chemical or physical properties from the first polymer under equivalent polymerization conditions, (C) a cocatalyst, activator, scavenger, or combination thereof, and (D) one or more olefins; wherein the polymer blend is formed in-situ, comprises crystalline polymer segments and amorphous polymer segments, and has an Mw of 100,000 or less.

This invention relates to an adhesive comprising a polymer composition comprising at least 50 mol % of one or more C3 to C40 olefins where the polymer composition has (a) a Dot T-Peel of 1 Newton or more on Kraft paper; (b) an Mw of at least 7000 to 80,000; (c) a branching index (g') of from 0.4 to 0.90 measured at the Mz of the polymer composition; (d) a heat of fusion of 1 to 70 J/g; and (e) a heptane insoluble fraction of 70 weight % or less, based upon the weight of the polymer composition, where the heptane insoluble fraction has branching index g&#x2032; of 0.9 or less as measured at the Mz of the polymer composition.

Styrenic block copolymers are blended with propylene copolymers to provide polymeric compositions with an improved balance between processability and elasticity. The compositions have improved processability by facilitating the ease with which a rubbery material, usually difficult to melt process, can be processed at high line speeds, which in turn improves the formation of the composition into films or other articles, assisted by a desired level of melt elasticity, i.e., a high elastic extension and recovery.
