A sensing and recovery system includes a sensing unit and a recovery unit coupled together. The sensing unit includes a sensor to generate a bandlimited continuous time analog signal, and a modulator coupled to the sensor to generate a modulated analog signal based upon modulation of the bandlimited continuous time analog signal at a modulating rate at least equal to a Nyquist rate for the bandlimited continuous time analog signal. A compressive sensing circuit is coupled to the modulator to generate a compressed sensed signal based upon conversion of the modulated analog signal at a sampling rate less than the Nyquist rate. The recovery unit recovers the bandlimited continuous time analog signal from the compressed sensed signal.

A data handling system includes a compressive sensing unit that receives a source date file. A sparseness module compressive sensing unit generates a sparse source data file by inducing sparseness into the source data file. A measurement module within the compressive sensing unit generates a compressed sensed source data file from the sparse source data file and based on a sensing matrix. The compressed sensed source data file is to be transmitted to a remote data storage facility for storage. A recovery unit generates the source data file from the compressed sensed source data file retrieved from the remote data storage facility and based upon the sensing matrix.

The present invention, in one aspect, is a method for determining motion and/or location parameters of a locomotive. One method embodiment includes steps of phase locking a pair of receivers having antennas at different locations on a locomotive to reference signals received from a set of satellites, determining a set of phase differences between the reference signals received at the antennas, and determining at least one of an accurate heading, heading rate, attitude, and attitude rate of the locomotive using the set of phase differences between the reference signals.

A path determination device is configured to receive measured heading and distance information; determine heading corrections, distance corrections, and residuals utilizing a Kalman filter assuming a selected, known path was taken; and to determine a probability that the selected, known path actually was taken utilizing the determined residuals. The additional information utilized by the Kalman filters provides a more robust measurement indication of whether a particular path is taken than mere measurements and correlations of path curvature.

Methods and apparatus for determining that a train has changed paths

A system and method for preventing collisions between vehicles, such as railway vehicles, by exchanging data regarding track position of the vehicles. By use of an on-board track database, the system provides an indication of the distance between vehicles based not on line-of-sight but on track distance. Additionally, a system and method for accurately determining location of railway vehicles without the use of a network of trackside indicators. The disclosed system uses a gyro, position indicator, and a satellite position determination along with a track database to maintain highly accurate estimates of measurement errors and track position.

Method and system for proximity detection and location determination

A method for determining the location of a vehicle whose movement is constrained to a route whose location is fixed and known, such as a train. An initial estimate of location is made based upon information contained in a route database based on distance traveled from a reset point. The accuracy of the estimated vehicle location is improved through use of just two global positioning satellites.

A system architecture and communication methodology for significantly reducing the size of an aircraft antenna required to provide full broadcast quality video communications with an aircraft via a satellite communications link includes a combination of video bandwidth compression, spread spectrum waveform processing and an electronically steered, circular aperture phased array antenna, that is conformal with an airframe surface of the aircraft. The combination provides sufficient signal power to the aircraft, enables interference from other satellites to be rejected and maintains the power spectral density of the satellite's video transmission within FCC requirements. The polarization of the receive array is aligned with that of the incoming beam from the relay satellite by means of an error signal feed back path to control the steering weights of the array. Because the phased arrays are conformal, it is necessary to modify the phase shift settings produced by the antenna steering mechanism executed by the degree of departure of the conformal geometry of the array from a planar configuration. A coordinate transformation look-up table is coupled in the control feedback path from the antenna steering mechanism and the phase shift elements of the phased array.

System for conducting video communications over satellite communication

Identification and extraction of hybrid, frequency-hopped direct sequence pseudo noise (FH/DS), signals from a multiband signal environment is effected by a sequential signal processing technique which examines the distribution of the energy content within a prescribed sub-spectrum window that is iteratively scanned or `slides` across the overall signal spectrum of interest. Based upon this energy content distribution, in particular the extent to which a sub-spectrum window contains energy that exhibits significant conjugate phase symmetry associated with a direct spread signal, the inventive signal processing technique proceeds to emphasize the spectral composition of components of which hybrid signals are comprised and to deemphasize the spectral composition of signals other than those contained in hybrid signals. Potential hybrid signal candidates whose spectral composition has been emphasized are then selectively combined with the deemphasized signals to isolate and identify the hybrid signals.
