A thin wall metal can is described having a converging neck portion and cylindrical chimney with a threaded sleeve encircling the chimney and restrained from rotation on the chimney by splines on an inner surface of the sleeve firmly engaged against an outwardly projecting shoulder on the can between the neck portion and chimney. The sleeve receives a threaded closure for closing and sealing the can.

An improved method and apparatus for scoring a metallic container wall, which facilitates scoring thin gauge, hard temper metal such as coated or uncoated aluminum to reduced score residuals wherein the scoring tool has a secondary antifracture score indenter on one or both sides of a primary indenter and in which the outboard secondary indenter has an outboard face angled about 30 to 40 degrees to vertical.

A methods for forming threads in the neck portion of a can made of thin gauge, hard temper metal which minimizes stretching of the metal in the neck portion. The method employs a grooved arbor and roller having a single thread lead around less than 360.degree. of the roller's perimeter.

An improvement in roll casting apparatus is disclosed which comprises side edge dam means for delivering a flow of gas toward the side edges of metal as it passes, from a source of molten metal, through a pair of opposing roll casting means to thereby contain the side flow of such metal during the roll casting operation. In a preferred embodiment, the gas is directed toward the cast metal through porous side edge dam means attached to a plenum which is inserted into the nip of the roll casting means.

A method is disclosed for reforming a metallic can end to increase the pressure holding capabilities of the container to which the can end is seamed comprising the steps of increasing the depth of an annular groove with respect to a substantially planar center wall and reducing the radius of curvature of a curved portion at the bottom of the annular groove between an inner wall on the inside of the annular groove and an integral chuckwall on the outside of the annular groove.

A tabless container opening device of work hardened metal having at least one substantially rigid inwardly displaceable opening panel bounded by a weakening line which includes a fracturable web and having an outwardly projecting deflectable portion in the container wall adjacent the weakening line around the opening panel is formed between first and second die members which displace metal in a container wall to form the weakening line and additionally coin the container wall along a zone adjacent one side of the weakening line.

A pull tab comprises a tab body, a tang and a portion connecting the tang to the tab body. In the pull tab, which is attachable to an easy-open end container wall, the tang projects from the tab body such that upon attaching the tang to the container wall, the tang holds the pull tab against a central portion of the container wall to prevent excessive lifting of the tab body therefrom when the central portion is outwardly domed as a result of pressure in the container.

An easy opening container component and a method and tools for forming the same are provided in which the container component includes a substantially rigid inwardly displaceable opening panel including a V-shaped weakening indentation therearound in the public or exterior surface of the component providing a fracturable web at the root of the indentation adapted to be fractured by inwardly directed pressure digitally applied against an integral outwardly projecting deflectable portion of the container component around the opening panel. The V-shaped indentation may be formed in the exterior surface of the container component while the opposite surface lies against a rounded anvil which forms an inwardly concave undersurface on the non-public surface of the container component, and may be formed in sheet metal without destroying the integrity of a protective coating on the interior surface thereof.

A method of scoring and a scoring tool which enables the scoring of laminated metallic container walls with a wide range of scoring indenter working face widths and which also enables the scoring of conventional and non-repair coated metallic container ends to thin residuals with a narrow, typically about 0.001 inch working face width, indenter. The method essentially consists of applying a compressive force between the principal score line and the wall periphery such that the force is closely spaced to and substantially coextensive with the score. This compressive force may conveniently be applied by a second scoring indenter having a lesser penetration depth than the primary score indenter. The scored container wall produced by the above described method of scoring and the scoring tool.
