A polymeric or plastic coating is provided which protects coated structures by forming an intumescent insulative fire resistant barrier. The coating is formed from the product of mixing an aromatic polyisocyanate, an aromatic polycarboxylic compound and about 1 to about 20% by weight of furfuryl alcohol. The structure to be protected is coated with the product of the mixture and the coating is dried. An intumescent polyimide fire resistant foam is formed when the coating is exposed to a (non-flame) heat source at temperature ranging from about 110.degree. C. to about 140.degree. C.

Intumescent flame-resistant coating composition

A friction material for brake linings is formed using a polystilbazole resin (3-16% by weight) to provide the matrix for the material. The balance of the material is filler material such as steel wool, metal powders, carbon, ceramic powders, and friction modifiers. The lining is produced by mixing the ingredients and hot pressing the mixture at temperatures which promote the flow and cure of the resin, and at pressures which produce a material of suitable density.

Friction material for brake linings and the like

A fire-resistant polystyryl pyridine polymer is provided by two separate reactions: (1) the condensation of a methylated pyridine, an aromatic dialdehyde, and a methyl vinyl pyridine; and (2) by the addition curing of the condensation product. The condensation product provides a prepolymer suitable for forming a composite with another material such as graphite fibers, and the addition reaction provides a means to cure the prepolymer without eliminating volatile products.

A plastic coating is provided which protects coated structures from flame. The coating is a product resulting from mixing an aromatic polyisocyanate, an aromatic polycarboxylic compound, and furfuryl alcohol at a temperature less than 80.degree. C. The structure to be protected from flame is coated with the product and the product is then dried. If the coated structure is exposed to flame, the coating intumesces to form a flame-resistant foam which protects the structure.

Intumescent flame-resistant coating

A polyimide foam is provided which has improved resistance to crumbling and to high temperatures. The foam is produced by reacting polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate (PAPI) with benzophenone-3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) in the presence of furfuryl alcohol and concentrated phosphoric acid (PA). The ratio of PA to PAPI, (PA/PAPI), must be approximately 20 to 26% by weight.

Ambient cure polyimide foam

Flame and temperature resistant polyimide foams are prepared by the reaction of an aromatic dianhydride, e.g., pyromellitic dianhydride, with an aromatic polyisocyanate, e.g., polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate (PAPI) in the presence of an inorganic acid and a lower molecular weight alcohol, e.g., dilute sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid and furfuryl alcohol. The exothermic reaction between the acid and the alcohol provides the heat necessary for the other reactants to polymerize without the application of any external heat. Such mixtures, therefore, are ideally suited for in situ foam formation, especially where the application of heat is not practical or possible.

A fuel-rich solid propellant gas generator is provided containing about 50 to 70% by weight of a boron fuel and about 30 to 50% by weight of an energetic binder containing a polymer of a dinitrofluoromethyl epoxide of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is alkylene of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

A nitrile-containing material is bonded to the surface of a rubber substrate in order to increase the wettability of the surface. A rubber substrate is placed in the afterglow region of an electrodeless glow-discharge chamber. A nitrile-containing material such as an acrylonitrile monomer is introduced into the chamber, causing the monomer to polymerize and bond to the surface of the rubber substrate. In one embodiment, the surface of the rubber is etched with sulfuric acid prior to bonding the nitrile-containing material to the surface.
