Personnel dosimeters are salvaged after use or prolonged storage by dividing batches thereof into separate groups on the visually observable degradation of radiation sensing surfaces thereon. The groups are reconditioned by different treatments to respectively correct for surface degradation and the effects of prior radiation exposure. A small fraction of the dosimeters withdrawn from the group treated for removal of the effects of prior radiation exposure, undergo gamma irradiation and measurement of resulting emissions to calculate correction factor assigned to the reconditioned dosimeters to compensate for reduced sensitivity.

Method of recycling dosimeters

A system for detecting a nuclear weapon explosion and assessing damage therefrom comprising a sensor head and an electronic signal processor is disclosed. The sensor head is spherical in shape and comprises a plurality of temperature sensors at different locations on the sensor head and provide information concerning the direction of the radiation. Elapsed time between thermal pulse peaks measure yield of the weapon. A plurality of pressure sensors embedded in the sensor head measure blast overpressure. The time lapse between the temperature and pressure signals measures distance. Gamma and neutron sensors indicate the type of weapon and radiation hazard. The electronic signal processor provides the necessary calculations.

Radiation source shield and calibrator

An improved particle detection tube including a method for applying a radion transparent electrically non-conductive, opaque to ultraviolet light coating to the mica window of the tube. The coating reduces erroneous counts by preventing arcing between the tube anode and window. A purified mineral bituminous hydrocarbon based wax coating is applied to the mica window by cleaning the window with a hydrocarbon or chlorinated solvent rinsing with isopropyl alcohol drying the window dissolving 4 to 20 milligrams of purified bituminous hydrocarbon based wax in 1 to 2 milliliters of a hydrocarbon or chlorinated solvent on the window, and rotating the tube until the solvent evaporates to produce a film of the wax thereon.
