The invention comprises a method for mapping a volume of the Earth's subsurface encompassing a selected path within said volume, comprising dividing the volume of the Earth's subsurface into a three-dimensional grid of voxels and transforming detected seismic signals representing seismic energy originating from said volume of the Earth's subsurface when no induced fracturing activity is occurring along said selected path and conducted to a recording unit for recording into signals representing energy originating from the voxels included in said grid of voxels, and utilizing said transformed seismic signals to estimate spatially continuous flow paths for reservoir fluids through said volume of the Earth's subsurface to said selected path.

Described herein are various embodiments of methods and corresponding hardware and software that are configured to illuminate or image the permeability field around or near a well that is to be fracked, both prior to fracking and after various fracking stages. Method for assessing the effectiveness of modifying transmissive networks of natural reservoirs

Disclosed are various embodiments of methods, devices and systems for performing a microseismic survey. According to some embodiments, microseismic signals are detected at seismic sensor stations deployed in two sets of seismic sensor lines, the seismic sensor lines within each set being substantially parallel to one another and the two sets of seismic sensor lines being mutually orthogonal. According to other embodiments, microseismic signals are detected at seismic sensor stations deployed in a hexagonal pattern. Such sensor geometries offer advantages over linear or radial arrays, including noise reduction, data acquisition flexibility as new wells are added to the survey area, and an improved distribution of data points above points in the subsurface.

Disclosed herein are various embodiments of methods and systems for determining the orientation and direction of first motion of a fault or fracture by optimizing an azimuthally-dependent attribute of signals generated by microseismic sources, comprising: recording microseismic data traces using a of sensors located at a plurality of sensor positions; subdividing the subsurface volume into spatial volumes corresponding to selected time intervals and comprising a plurality of voxels; for each voxel, applying a time shift to the microseismic data traces that is substantially equal to a travel time from each voxel to the corresponding sensor position, and determining for the voxel the orientation and direction of first motion of the fault or fracture corresponding to a maximum value for the voxel of at least one azimuthally-dependent attribute of the microseismic data traces.

Method for imaging microseismic events using an azimuthally-dependent focal mechanism

A method and system for seismic data processing utilizes azimuthal variations in the velocity of seismic signals. The system and method utilizes a plurality of seismic energy sources that are located at known positions at the surface of the earth. The seismic energy sources generate seismic signals that propagate downward into the earth. Some of the seismic signals are reflected and diffracted by various sub-surface layers and are returned to the surface of the earth. The returned seismic signals are received by a plurality of receivers. The method includes the step of determining the distance from an energy source to an image point. A fast travel time of the seismic signal from the energy source to the image point is determined, and a slow travel time of the seismic signal from the energy source to the image point is determined. The azimuth angle between the energy source and the surface location of the image point is calculated. A first travel time of the seismic signal traveling from the energy source to the image point is calculated. A second travel time of the seismic signal traveling from the image point to the seismic receiver is calculated. The total travel time is calculated by adding the first and second travel time. The amplitudes from the recorded signal at the total travel time are phase adjusted and added into the output image at the image point. The foregoing steps are repeated for a plurality of image points beneath the surface of the earth and the total travel time is calculated.

Seismic data processing method and system for migration of seismic signals incorporating azimuthal variations in the velocity

A method of producing a velocity volume for a seismic survey volume, based on two-way time seismic data and process velocity data, is disclosed. Two-way time seismic data is loaded into a computer for a plurality of seismic shot lines in the survey region, as are process velocities for common depth points (CDPs) in the survey region. The process velocities correspond to velocities used to perform normal move-out, dip move-out, migration and other imaging processes. The computer can display the two-way time information in cross-section or map views, and can display the velocity functions as a function of two-way time. The human analyst enters interpreted velocities, based on actual data or on visualization of the horizons, into the cross-sectional view of the seismic shot line, and then edits the input velocity data to produce a velocity function, for each CDP of interest, that matches the interpreted values. Repeating this process for each of the seismic shot lines, and for as many CDPs as desired, produces a velocity volume model more suitable for use in time-to-depth conversion.
