An apparatus is disclosed for making circuitry with passive fundamental components more robust. In example implementations, an apparatus includes at least one passive fundamental component and at least one redundant passive fundamental component. The apparatus also includes fault tolerant circuitry coupled to the at least one passive fundamental component and the at least one redundant passive fundamental component. The fault tolerant circuitry includes fault detection circuitry configured to detect a fault of the at least one passive fundamental component. The fault tolerant circuitry also includes component repair circuitry configured to disconnect the at least one passive fundamental component based on the fault.

Robust circuitry for passive fundamental components

An apparatus is disclosed for robust transistor circuitry. In example implementations, an apparatus includes a current mirror and fault handler circuitry that is coupled to the current mirror. The current mirror includes a core transistor having a control terminal, a first transistor, and a second transistor. The first transistor has a control terminal that is coupled to the control terminal of the core transistor. The second transistor has a control terminal that is coupled to the control terminal of the core transistor. The fault handler circuitry is configured to select the first transistor or the second transistor to provide a mirrored current of the current mirror.

Robust transistor circuitry

An advantageously fast and asynchronous interface is disclosed for the tuning of an RF frontend. The interface transmits a tuning word to the RF frontend that controls a tuning of the RF frontend responsive to a channel index.

An apparatus includes a first low noise amplifier (LNA) in a first receive path. The apparatus further includes receive circuitry in the first receive path. The receive circuitry is configured to receive an output of the first LNA and to receive an output of a second LNA within a second receive path.

Enhancing data throughput using multiple receivers

A low-power diversity receiver includes at least two receive paths, each of which is designated as a primary or secondary receive path. A primary receive path is compliant with system requirements (e.g., IS-98D requirements). A secondary receive path is not fully compliant with the system requirements and is designed for lower power, less area, and lower cost than the primary receive path. For a multi-antenna receiver, the two receive paths may be used to simultaneously process two received signals from two antennas. For a single-antenna receiver, either the primary or secondary receive path is selected, e.g., depending on whether or not large amplitude 'jammers' are detected, to process a single input signal from one antenna. The receiver may include additional receive paths for additional frequency bands and/or GPS.

Low-power wireless diversity receiver with multiple receive paths

A tunable multi-band receiver supporting operation on a plurality of frequency bands is disclosed. In an exemplary design, the tunable multi-band receiver includes an antenna tuning network, a tunable notch filter, and at least one low noise amplifier (LNA). The antenna tuning network tunes an antenna (e.g., a diversity antenna) to a receive band in a plurality of receive bands. The tunable notch filter is tunable to a transmit band in a plurality of transmit bands and attenuates signal components in the transmit band. One LNA among the at least one LNA amplifies an output signal from the tunable notch filter. The tunable multi-band receiver may further include one or more additional tunable notch filters to further attenuate the signal components in the transmit band.

Tunable multi-band receiver

A method of harmonic selection for mixing with a received signal includes receiving a radio frequency (RF) signal and determining a variable gain setting from among a plurality of gain settings or from a range of gain settings. The variable gain setting is based on the RF signal. The method further includes selecting a harmonic to provide to an input of a mixer to generate an output signal. A baseband signal or an intermediate frequency signal is generated from the output signal. The harmonic is selected based on the variable gain setting. An apparatus includes a harmonic selector that is configured to generate an indication of a selected harmonic. The harmonic is selected based on a variable gain setting determined from among a plurality of gain settings or from a range of gain settings. Based on the selected harmonic, a mixer generates an output signal. A baseband signal or an intermediate signal is generated from the output signal.

Apparatus and method of harmonic selection for mixing with a received signal

Techniques to reduce LO leakage by controlling the amplitude of LO signal based on the level of output signal after the frequency conversion process. An LO generator receives a VCO signal and generates an LO signal having a variable amplitude and a frequency that is related to the frequency of the VCO signal. A variable gain amplifier receives a control signal and adjusts the amplitude of the LO signal based on the control signal. The variable amplitude LO signal is used for frequency upconversion (e.g., direction upconversion) of an input signal (e.g., at baseband) to obtain an output signal (e.g., at RF). The relationship between LO signal amplitude and output signal level may be defined by a particular transfer function. In general, the LO signal is set higher for higher output signal level and is reduced proportionally for lower output signal level.

Direct conversion with variable amplitude LO signals

A wireless device for receiving composite signals is disclosed. The wireless device includes an antenna. The wireless device also includes a first amplifier coupled to the antenna. The wireless device further includes a second amplifier coupled to the antenna. The wireless device also includes a first receiver. The wireless device further includes a second receiver. The wireless device also includes a first switch that couples the first receiver to the output of either the first amplifier or the second amplifier. The wireless device further includes a second switch that couples the second receiver to the output of either the first amplifier or the second amplifier.

Antenna sharing for radio frequency signals in same frequency bands

A wideband telecommunications device with narrow band support. The device may be a receiver having a wireless interface configured to receive combined first and second signals, the first signal having data in a first frequency band and the second signal having data in a second frequency band wider than the first frequency band, wherein the first frequency band is within the second frequency band. The receiver may also be a processing system configured to recover the data in the first signal from the combined first and second signals. The device may be a transmitter having a first signal source configured to provide a first signal having data in a first frequency band; a second signal source having a second frequency band, the first frequency band being within a sub-band of the second frequency band, wherein the second signal source is configured to provide a second signal having data in the second frequency band with no data in the sub-band of the second frequency band, a processing system configured to combine the first and second signals, and a wireless interface configured to transmit the combined first and second signal.

Methods and apparatuses for multimode Bluetooth and WLAN operation concurrently

A system and method in which the position update rate is adaptively modified, based on previous position measurements. By adjusting the update rate based on velocity predictions from two or more position fixes, a lower update rate may be used without exceeding the maximum error. Lowering the update rate reduces power consumption in the UE, providing longer battery operation. The updating method may comprise periodically repeating the velocity prediction and periodically adjusting the update rate responsive thereto. The update rate may be adjusted using additional information such as an acceleration prediction, a minimum update rate, or a preferred error. In some embodiments a model for user movement may be used to provide more accurate predictions, for example, stationary, walking, jogging, city driving, and freeway driving. The updating method may comprise receiving user input regarding the maximum position error.

GPS position tracking method with variable updating rate for power conservation

This disclosure describes companded transmit path techniques that may be implemented in a wireless communication device to reduce power consumption and possibly simplify signal modulation. In accordance with this disclosure, in phase (I) and quadrature phase (Q) components of a transmit waveform are compressed at baseband, and an emphasis envelope is generated to represent this compression. The compressed I and Q components are then converted to analog signals and processed. This analog processing may include the mixing process in which the compressed I and Q signals are modulated onto a carrier waveform. The emphasis envelope signal is then used to expand the modulated waveform.

Companded transmit path for wireless communication

A wireless device achieves good performance using a crystal oscillator that is not compensated for temperature. The crystal oscillator provides a reference signal having a temperature dependent frequency error. A control unit estimates the frequency error (e.g., based on a received pilot) and provides a frequency error estimate. A clock generator generates a digital clock, which tracks chip timing, based on the reference signal and the frequency error estimate. A receiver frequency downconverts an input RF signal with a receive LO signal having the frequency error and provides an analog baseband signal. An ADC digitizes the analog baseband signal based on a sampling clock having the frequency error and provides ADC samples. A re-clocking circuit re-clocks the ADC samples based on a digital clock and provides data samples. A digital rotator frequency translates the data samples based on the frequency error estimate and provides frequency-translated samples centered near DC.

Wireless device with a non-compensated crystal oscillator

Techniques for mitigating additional phase noise in local oscillator (LO) signals, which may be due to digital noise coupling, are described. A correction signal having an estimate of additional phase noise in an LO signal is derived. The correction signal is applied to a data signal either after downconversion or before upconversion with the LO signal to mitigate the additional phase noise. To derive the correction signal, an input signal having the additional phase noise may be obtained by downconverting a replica LO signal or based on the replica LO signal without downconversion. The input signal may be digitized and filtered to pass a single tone and suppress remaining tones. A replica signal may be derived based on the filtered signal and frequency translated to obtain a phase noise estimate signal at DC. The complex conjugate of the phase noise estimate signal may be provided as the correction signal.

Method and apparatus for mitigating phase noise

An adaptive filter suitable for fabrication on an RF integrated circuit and used for transmit (TX) leakage rejection in a wireless full-duplex communication system is described. The adaptive filter includes a summer and an adaptive estimator. The summer receives an input signal having a TX leakage signal and an estimator signal having an estimate of the TX leakage signal, subtracts the estimator signal from the input signal, and provides an output signal having the TX leakage signal attenuated. The adaptive estimator receives the output signal and a reference signal having a version of the transmit signal, estimates the TX leakage signal in the input signal based on the output signal and the reference signal, and provides the estimator signal. The adaptive estimator may utilize an LMS algorithm to minimize a mean square error between the TX leakage signal in the input signal and the TX leakage signal estimate in the estimator signal.
