A method of creating a tissue thickness compensator is disclosed. The method comprises dispensing oxidized regenerated cellulose onto a cover sheet, folding the cover sheet to at least partially capture the oxidized regenerated cellulose therein, and creating the tissue thickness compensator by applying a seal to the folded cover sheet.

Systems, devices, and methods for controlling cooperative surgical instruments are provided. Various aspects of the present disclosure provide for coordinated operation of surgical instruments accessing various surgical sites from different or shared surgical approaches to achieve a common or cooperative surgical purpose. For example, various methods, devices, and systems disclosed herein can enable the coordinated treatment of tissue by disparate minimally invasive surgical systems that approach the tissue from varying anatomical spaces and must operate differently, but in concert with, one another to effect a desired surgical treatment.

Methods and systems for controlling cooperative surgical instruments

A surgical tool includes a stage portion that includes opposing first and second ends, a lead screw and at least one spline that extend between the first and second ends, and a first layer of a carriage movably mounted to the lead screw and the at least one spline. An instrument portion is releasably coupled to the stage portion and includes one or more additional layers of the carriage removably coupled to the first layer, and an elongate shaft extending distally from the one or more additional layers and having an end effector arranged at a distal end of the elongate shaft. The elongate shaft and the end effector penetrate the elevator layer and the first end when the instrument portion is coupled to the stage portion.

An ultrasonic surgical instrument includes an end effector having an ultrasonic blade, an ultrasonic transducer assembly, and a shaft assembly. The shaft assembly includes a tube, and an waveguide. The waveguide is received within the tube and is acoustically connected between the ultrasonic blade and ultrasonic transducer assembly to communicate ultrasonic vibrations from the ultrasonic transducer assembly to the ultrasonic blade. The waveguide includes an acoustic body, a first isolation structure, a second isolation structure and a sheath. The acoustic body extends along a longitudinal axis. The first isolation structure radially extends about the acoustic body. The second isolation structure radially extends about the acoustic body and is longitudinally spaced from the first isolation structure. The sheath is radially positioned between the first isolation structure and the tube and is further radially positioned between the second isolation structure.

An apparatus includes a proximal structure configured to be positioned extracorporeally relative to a patient, and a distal structure extending distally from the proximal structure and configured to be passed through a body wall and into a body cavity of the patient. The distal structure cooperates with the primary structure to define a primary axis and a working channel sized and configured to receive and guide a surgical scope shaft distally therethrough along the primary axis. The proximal structure has a greater maximum dimension in a direction transverse to the primary axis than the distal structure. The apparatus further includes an articulation feature at a distal end of the distal structure that is configured to articulate relative to the proximal structure to direct the surgical scope shaft along a secondary axis that is angled relative to the primary axis.

A surgical tool includes a handle having opposing first and second ends, a lead screw and a spline are rotatably coupled to and extend between the opposing ends. The spline is arranged a distance from the lead screw such that the lead screw assumes torsional loading generated by the spline. Another surgical tool includes first and second splines with a first activating mechanism coupled to the first spline and a second activating mechanism coupled to the second spline. Torsional loading generated by the first and second splines to operate the first and second activating mechanisms are balanced by rotating the first and second splines in opposite directions. A method of minimizing torsional loads on components of a robotic surgical tool includes actuating the surgical tool and assuming a torsional force acting on a carriage of the surgical tool with a load balancing member included in the surgical tool.

An imaging instrument is operable to provide an image of an exterior of the uterus of the patient. A console includes a display screen and is configured to provide a view from the imaging instrument of the exterior of the uterus of the patient, on the display screen. The console is further configured to provide an indicator on the view from the imaging instrument, on the display screen, the indicator indicating a location of a predefined anatomical structure, the indicator being provided as an overlay on the predefined anatomical structure.

A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapling instrument includes a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples and a cartridge deck. The staple cartridge assembly also includes a compressible adjunct positionable against the cartridge deck, wherein the staples are deployable into tissue captured against the compressible adjunct, and wherein the compressible adjunct comprises a first biocompatible layer comprising a first portion, a second biocompatible layer comprising a second portion, and crossed spacer fibers extending between the first portion and the second portion.

A method of applying a buttress to a surgical stapler end effector comprises positioning a buttress assembly between an anvil and a staple cartridge of the end effector. The buttress assembly comprises a buttress body and an adhesive material. The adhesive material faces either an underside of the anvil or a deck of the staple cartridge. The anvil is in an open position relative to the staple cartridge during the act of positioning the buttress assembly between the anvil and the staple cartridge. The method further comprises moving the anvil toward the staple cartridge then moving the anvil back to the open position. The buttress assembly is adhered to the underside of the anvil or the deck of the staple cartridge via the adhesive material with the anvil moved back to the open position. The adhesive material comprises a bioabsorbable polymer.

Method of applying a buttress to a surgical stapler

A buttress is applied to an end effector of a surgical stapler. The buttress is loaded on a platform of a buttress applier cartridge. The end effector is closed upon the platform. An adhesive layer of the buttress secures the buttress to the end effector. The buttress is thus adhered to the end effector when the end effector is opened. The end effector is then actuated on tissue of a patient, thereby stapling the buttress to the tissue.

Generally, a system for use in a robotic surgical system may be used to determine an attachment state between a tool driver, sterile adapter, and surgical tool of the system. A robotic surgical system may include a cannula attachment device or cannula mount having a locking mechanism configured to pivot between an unlocked position and a locked over-center position. The locking mechanism may actuate a clamp or other feature that is configured to move between a closed position and an open position. The clamp may include a locating structure with one or more tapered surfaces that is configured to mate with a corresponding structure disposed on a portion of a cannula when the cannula is positioned in the cannula attachment device. The locating structure may guide the cannula into the attachment device, as well as assist with orientating the cannula relative to the attachment device.
