For continuous high temperature operation over a service life in excess of twenty years, a flexible pipe joint includes various features that tend to reduce the temperature of the load-bearing flex element or reduce strain in the warmer elastomeric layers of the flex element. These features include a heat shield of low heat conductivity material integrated into the inner profile of the pipe extension and interposed between the central bore of the pipe joint and the flex element, low heat conductivity metal alloy components between the hot production fluid and the flex element, high temperature resistant elastomer at least in the warmest inner elastomer layer of the flex element, and a flex element constructed to shift strain from the warmer inner elastomer layers to the colder outer elastomer layers by providing greater shear area, different layer thickness, and/or higher elastic modulus elastomer for the warmer inner elastomer layers.

High temperature flexible pipe joint

Force transducers are integrated in an elastomeric flex bearing to provide signals for determining the tension and torque upon a tension member coupled to the bearing and for computation of the azimuth and elevation of the tension member. Preferably the force transducers are mounted to or embedded in an outer metal load ring of the flex bearing and are bonded with the outer metal load ring to the elastomer of the flex bearing. The force transducer, for example, include a diaphragm bonded to the elastomer, and the diaphragm has a diameter in excess of the spacing between the outer metal load ring and the nearest laminated metal reinforcement of the bearing. In one embodiment, metal foil strain gages are bonded to the surface of the diaphragm opposite from the elastomer. In another embodiment, the diaphragm transmits pressure to hydraulic fluid between the diaphragm and the outer metal support ring. A proximity sensor sensing the position of the diaphragm with respect to the outer metal support ring can be used to detect any loss of hydraulic fluid and to calibrate the hydraulic transducer under an unknown load by injecting hydraulic fluid under pressure until the diaphragm assumes a position for which the fluid pressure is indicative of the pressure applied by the elastomer to the diaphragm.

Load and deflection measurement system for elastomeric bearings

Vertical movement of a floating marine platform is reduced by tendons extending from the platform to anchors on the seabed. A final tension adjustment to equalize the load on all of the tendons is made by a respective tension adjustment mechanism incorporated into the top connector of each tendon. The tension adjustment mechanism includes a split load ring assembly having an upper ring and a lower ring. The upper ring and the lower ring abut each other at respective complementary surfaces. Each surface has a series of serrated ramps. A rotation of one ring with respect to the other causes the upper ring to climb over the lower ring to thereby increase the tension in the tendon. Rotation of the upper ring with respect to the lower ring, for example, is achieved by a motor driven gear ring.

A riser tensioner system 10 is provided for use on offshore oil drilling platforms to support a riser 12 relative to a floating platform. The riser tensioner system 10 uses either elastomeric pads 32 or helical metal springs 100 as an energy absorbing medium, rather than hydraulic, or pneumatic systems. The elastomeric pads 32 or helical metal springs 100 are maintained in compression within a shock absorber housing 76 by a plunger 70 which is compressed by the weight of the riser 12. If the riser tensioner system 10 is arranged to place the shock absorber 20 in tension, the shock absorber plunger 70 is inverted in the housing 76 to maintain the elastomeric pads 32 or helical metal springs 100 in compression. To achieve varied response characteristics, nested inner and outer elastomeric pads 50, 52 or compression springs 102, 106 are arranged to act together. A varied response characteristic may also be obtained by varying the elastomeric pad modulus or the helical spring constant, or by use of conically shaped elastomeric pads 80.

Riser tensioner system for use on offshore platforms using elastomeric

A continuous bend flexible/rigid riser system is provided for coupling a subsea location to an offshore platform or vessel. The riser system comprises a first rigid pipe section coupled at its upper end to the platform. A plurality of intermediate pipe sections are mutually coupled end to end, and are coupled in series with the first rigid pipe section by means of a plurality of flexible couplings. The lower end of the last in the series of intermediate pipe sections is coupled to the subsea location. The flexible/rigid riser system reduces bending stresses transmitted along the riser by allowing angular displacement of the pipe sections with respect to one another.

Flexible/rigid riser system

A flexible joint 13 is employed to sealingly connect a pair of tubular members 16, 18 while still permitting limited articulated movement therebetween. The flexible joint 13 includes a housing 26 with upper and lower ring-like plates 32, 34 coaxially arranged about the tubular members 16, 18. A pair of annular elastomeric bearings 40, 42 are positioned within the housing 26 and act against shoulders 44, 46 of the tubular members 16, 18 to flexibly retain the tubular members 16, 18 within the housing 26. A bellows 20 sealingly couples the tubular members 16, 18 together while permitting movement therebetween. An annular chamber 56 formed between the bellows 20 and housing 26 is filled with a fluid, such as silicon or oil. Means is provided for adjusting the volume of the chamber 56 or volume of fluid in the chamber 56 to maintain an approximately zero pressure differential across the bellows 20.

Flexible joint with non-diffusive barrier

A riser tensioner system 10 includes a pair of supports 14, 16 affixed to an offshore platform in spaced apart relation to one another. A shaft 24 extends between the supports 14, 16 and is pivotally coupled thereto by an elastomeric bearing 26. A central support 22 is pivotally coupled to the shaft 24 at about the midpoint between the supports 14, 16 and fixedly coupled to coil springs 30 or elastomeric springs 100 coaxially arranged about the shaft 24 and extending between the central support 22 and each of the supports 14, 16. The central support 22 is also coupled to a riser 12 so that relative movement between the offshore platform and the riser 12 causes the central support 22 to pivot on the shaft 24 and wind or unwind the coil springs 30 or elastomeric springs 100 for relative upward and downward movement thereof. A pretensioner mechanism 42 increases the force exerted by the springs 30 or elastomeric springs 100 to increase the upward force applied to the riser 12. In this manner, the riser tensioner system 10 fully supports the riser 12 while allowing relative vertical movement therebetween.
