The present invention is an electronically controlled battery contactor that opens (disconnects) or closes (connects) the battery circuit from the other parts of a motor vehicle electrical system based on measured or sensed data derived from monitoring the electrical system, communicating with other on-board control units, and pre-programmed requirements specific to the vehicle operation. The primary functions are to protect the battery from excessive current drain when the vehicle is parked, protect against short circuits across the main electrical feed, and provide emergency disconnect for vehicle impact, rollover or sensed thermal events. A programmed delay function controls the opening of the contactor in conjunction with other electronic control units that may require electrical power for a period of time after vehicle shutdown. A master electrical disconnect switch is provided for manual override for servicing the vehicle or during an emergency.

Intelligent battery disconnect

An engine-powered vehicle includes an engine, a battery corresponding to a battery voltage, a starter, an alternator, a plurality of switchable electrical loads, a key switch configured to control the switchable electrical loads and corresponding to a key voltage, and an electrical system health monitor (ESHM) controller. The ESHM controller is configured to monitor a plurality of voltages, to determine an operating state based on the plurality of voltages, and to determine whether an operating state is a valid operating state or a fault state. The ESHM controller is configured to set a fault alert for vehicle maintenance when the operating state is a fault state and, when the operating state is a valid operating state, to monitor a predetermined set of input parameters corresponding to the operating state, to detect certain anomalies based voltage waveforms of the plurality of voltages, and to perform a corrective action based on the anomalies.

Electrical system health monitor (ESHM) system and method

This invention provides fire prevention and detection for heavy-duty and medium-duty commercial and military vehicles by ensuring the engine is automatically and immediately shut down upon the occurrence of a catastrophic event that may lead to a fire. The shutdown is achieved through the isolation of the vehicle batteries and alternator and the disconnecting of those devices from all electrical circuits. Anomalies that cause the shutdown and disconnect include battery and vehicle load currents that are outside a preset range, excessive temperatures, detection of smoke in the drive compartment or sleeper, or detection of a frontal impact accident or vehicle rollover. Once disconnected, the battery contactor must be manually reset in order to restore electrical power to the vehicle.

Vehicle fire prevention and detection system

A multi-function turn signal arrangement for an incorporating vehicle includes a user interface having a plurality of operator specifiable signaling modes including a right-direction-signal momentary blinking mode and a left-direction-signal momentary blinking mode. A controller is configured to receive input from the user interface indicative of an operator specified direction and mode and to initiate an automated signaling routine when one of the respective momentary blinking modes is specified and the controller determines that the incorporating vehicle is traveling at a speed within a predetermined speed range. The turn signal is maintained until a steering wheel of the incorporating vehicle is turned a predetermined amount in the signified direction and returned to the neutral, straight-ahead-driving position for a predetermined period of time and the vehicle remains in the predetermined speed range.

An electronic device mounting box includes a tray to which an electronic device is adapted to be attached. The mounting box includes a box having a front opening through which the tray is adapted to pass, left and right sides, and left and right supports associated with the left and right sides for supporting the tray along left and right sides, respectively, of the tray and permitting the tray to be moved between an access position at least partially outside the front opening to an installed position inside the box.

A battery cable circuit protection device and circuit for preventing fluctuations in voltage from a supply battery is provided. The device includes a terminal base having a battery cable lug member adapted for mounting to and making an electrical connection with a battery post of the battery. A battery cable mounting structure is fixedly connected to the terminal base for detachably connecting the terminal base to a battery cable. The battery cable supplies a vehicle starter motor with electrical energy. A first fuse mount supported by the terminal base provides electrical interconnection to the battery post. A second fuse mount supported by the terminal base provides electrical energy to vehicle electrical systems other than the vehicle starter motor. The first and second fuse mounts are adapted for detachable a connection to a fuse which provides electrical interconnection between the first and second fuse mounts.

An illuminated air fairing display device for a truck is provided according to one embodiment of the invention. The illuminated air fairing display device includes an air fairing, a light transmissive region in the fairing, and a plurality of light sources positioned in close relation to the light transmissive region. The light transmissive region includes at least one logo or indicium. Light emitted from the plurality of light sources passes through and illuminates the light transmissive region.

A light fixture for a vehicle includes a housing with a light-transmitting face divided into two adjacent light-transmitting face portions, which adjacent face portions are separate and discrete first and second face portions. A light-emitting diode (LED) array is positioned in the housing so as to emit light from the first face portion, the LED array including a plurality of adjacent rows of LEDs, each row of LEDs including a plurality of adjacent LEDs. A first electrical connector is provided for connecting the LED array to an electrical system of the vehicle so as to transmit light from the LED array when the vehicle running lights are on, when the vehicle is braking, and for signaling a vehicle turn. A further light source is positioned in the housing so as to emit light from the second face portion, and a second electrical connector is provided for connecting this light source to the electrical system of the vehicle so as to transmit light from the light source when the vehicle is backing up. The invention is also applicable to a method of converting a conventional light fixture for a vehicle into a light fixture as described above.

Vehicular lamp and method

A trailer voltage adapter includes a voltage converter which can be powered by the electrical system of a tractor and provide electrical power at a second voltage required by the electrical lighting system of the trailer. A plurality of relays are controlled by trailer lamp signals from the tractor and provide electrical power to the electrical lighting system of the trailer at the second voltage in accordance with the trailer lamp signals from the tractor.
