An electroluminescent panel includes a release layer, a first insulating layer on the release layer, a plurality of lamp layers on the first insulating layer, and a second insulating layer overlying the lamp layers. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the first insulating layer and the second insulating layer include low molecular weight PVDF/HFP resin. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, at least one of the lamp layers includes a UV-cured resin and the remaining lamp layers include a heat-cured resin.

Dimensionally stable electroluminescent lamp without substrate

An EL panel includes a substrate 1-5 mils (0.25-1.26 mm) thick supported by a reinforcing frame screen printed or otherwised deposited in or on the panel.

EL lamp with flexible areas

A light source producing predominantly blue light is tuned to the transmission bands of color LCD subpixels for optimum light transmission and color separation. The spectral output of the light source has three peaks located in the same areas of the spectrum where LCD color filters transmit most of the light, thereby providing a balanced white. It has been discovered that brightness enhancing films aid in the color conversion by enhancing the cascaded peaks, in addition to increasing the brightness of the light source.

Light scattering particles are added to the ink used for printing the cascading layer. The particles and cascading material are then printed in the same layer. Light entering the cascading layer is scattered, re-entering the cascading material thereby increasing the effectiveness of the cascading material and enabling one to use less material. Because less cascading material is used, the cost of the EL lamp is reduced and cascading efficiency is increased. The light scattering particles and the cascading material are in an overprint or are in the phosphor layer.

At least one layer of cascading material overlying an EL lamp converts the light emitted by the EL lamp into infrared light. The EL lamp is supported within in a container transparent to at least infrared light, along with at least one battery and an inverter to provide power for the lamp in portable applications. The lamp is rolled to form a cylinder and fits within the inside diameter of the container. The lamp can be turned on or off by means of a switch interrupting current from a battery or to the lamp.

Infrared emitting EL lamp

An EL lamp is powered by bursts of high frequency signal repeated at low frequency, i.e. having a low duty cycle envelope, in order to shift the color of light emitted by the phosphor in the lamp without degrading the life of the lamp. The bursts include one or more consecutive cycles of a high frequency signal or several closely spaced cycles of a high frequency signal.

Controlling color shift in EL phosphors

In a process for making an EL lamp, a rear electrode is roll coated on a temporary substrate, followed by successive roll coatings of a dielectric layer and a phosphor layer. A transparent, conductive layer on a transparent substrate is laminated to the phosphor layer layer and the temporary substrate is removed. The layers are applied from a slurry or ink and bladed to a uniform thickness across the width of the temporary substrate. The process can be continuous using rolls of material for the temporary substrate. The length of a lamp is limited by the length of the temporary substrate. The width of the lamp is determined by the size of the apparatus used to apply and to spread the layers.

Roll coated EL panel

An EL panel includes lamp materials laminated to a conductive sheet, wherein the lamp materials include a front electrode, a phosphor layer, and a dielectric layer. The conductive sheet is the rear electrode for the EL panel. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the conductive sheet is metal foil, a layer of a printed circuit board, or a layer on a flex circuit. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, the phosphor layer and the dielectric layer are applied to the front electrode by screen printing or by roll coating.

EL panel laminated to rear electrode

An EL lamp having a transparent front electrode is overprinted with an opaque graphic having the same color as the phosphor in the lamp. A translucent coating over the graphic is clear or tinted. The graphic is visible only when the lamp is lit. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a second graphic, visible whether or not the lamp is lit, is overprinted on the lamp. The second graphic has a color perceptibly different from the color of the phosphor and is opaque, transparent, or any opacity between opaque and transparent.
