A rotor system for an aircraft includes an open rotor assembly comprising a plurality of rotor blades connected to a rotor mast via a yoke, wherein the rotor assembly is tiltable between a first position corresponding to an airplane mode and a second position corresponding to a helicopter mode; and a drive system for providing rotational energy to the open rotor assembly via the rotor mast, the drive system comprising at least one electric motor for providing rotational energy to a drive shaft and a gearbox connected to the drive shaft for receiving rotational energy from the at least one electric motor via the drive shaft and providing rotational energy to the rotor mast via a rotor shaft; wherein the drive system is rotatable relative to the wing about a tilt axis and the rotor shaft is coaxial with the drive shaft.

A rotor system for an aircraft includes a rotor assembly comprising a plurality of rotor blades connected to a rotor mast, wherein the rotor assembly is tiltable relative to a wing of the aircraft between a first position corresponding to an airplane mode of the aircraft and a second position corresponding to a helicopter mode of the aircraft; and a drive system for providing rotational energy to the rotor assembly via the rotor mast. The drive system includes at least one electric motor for generating rotational energy to a motor shaft; and a gearbox connected to receive rotational energy from the at least one electric motor via the motor shaft and to provide rotational energy to the rotor mast via a rotor shaft, wherein the at least one electric motor is fixed relative to the wing of the aircraft.

Systems and methods are described for shoulders that can be implemented on shafts in gear systems, such as a drive train. The shoulders, in combination with other components like bearings, or nuts, can help restrict movement of the shaft within the drive train. Use of the shoulders in various embodiments can avoid the need for grind reliefs in corners. Grind reliefs can help in prior art systems where machining or grinding is used at surfaces where raceways of bearings border shoulders that are integrated with the shaft. Grind reliefs create tight spaces where edge breaks are difficult to create. Press-fit shoulders, such as described herein, allow machining and edge break creation on the shaft prior to installation of the shoulder.

A propulsion assembly for a rotorcraft. The propulsion assembly includes a mast having an internal ledge, a raceway station and an external ridge with at least a portion of the raceway station positioned axially between the internal ledge and the external ridge. A nonintegral raceway is receivable by the raceway station to form a press fit joint between the mast and the nonintegral raceway. A mast bearing assembly includes a plurality of bearings configured to engage an outer surface of the nonintegral raceway. The internal ledge is configured to generate a nonuniform normal force between the mast and the nonintegral raceway along the raceway station that axially biases the nonintegral raceway toward the external ridge, thereby securing the nonintegral raceway at the raceway station.

A pump assembly, comprising a pump and housing having an inlet passage and an outlet passage. The pump includes inlet and outlet ports and opposing first and second drive inputs configured to be rotated together in a pumping direction to operate the pump. The pump can be installed in the housing in a first orientation, in which the first drive input is configured for being rotated by a drive source in a first external direction to operate the pump, and a second orientation, in which the second drive input is configured for being rotated by the drive source in a second external direction opposite of the first external direction to operate the pump. In both the first orientation and the second orientation, the inlet port is in fluid communication with the inlet passage and the outlet port is in fluid communication with the outlet passage.

Breathing systems and methods for a gearbox is described. Embodiments preferably create a closed system for air within the gearbox. As an operating gearbox warms the air or fluid within, or an altitude change causes air to expand or contract, increased pressure can result and air can escape through tubing to a cannister. The cannister can receive the expanding air in an impermeable cavity that is proximate to a bladder open or partially open to an exterior environment. Air can press on the bladder, expanding the cavity and shrinking the bladder until a pressure equilibrium is reached. As operation of the gearbox is lowered or powered off, or another altitude change occurs, the air can cool and/or retract into the gearbox. The bladder can then expand and press on the cavity until equalizing the pressure within the cannister.

A drive system for an aircraft such as a tiltrotor aircraft. The drive system includes first and second gearbox assemblies in mechanical communication with each other. A first lubrication system is associated with the first gearbox assembly and includes a bifurcated tank configured to contain a lubricant in an operating chamber including a lower sump and in an emergency chamber including an upper sump. A second lubrication system is associated with the second gearbox assembly. An emergency pump is in fluid communication with the emergency chamber. The emergency pump is configured to supply the lubricant to the first gearbox assembly from the emergency chamber responsive to a failure in the first lubrication system. In addition, the emergency pump is configured to supply the lubricant to the second gearbox assembly and to the operating chamber from the emergency chamber responsive to a failure in the second lubrication system.

A propulsion assembly for a rotorcraft includes a raceway having a tapered inner surface and a mast configured to receive the raceway at a raceway receiving station. The mast has a tapered outer surface at the raceway receiving station. The propulsion assembly includes a mast bearing assembly having a plurality of bearings facing the mast to engage the raceway. The tapered inner surface of the raceway is friction welded to the tapered outer surface of the mast at the raceway receiving station to form a tapered friction weld line.

A swashplate assembly includes: a mounting sleeve configured for coupling to and around an upper portion of a gearbox, wherein the mounting sleeve extends downwards from the upper portion of the gearbox; a tilt sleeve coupled to the mounting sleeve, wherein the tilt sleeve has a curved exterior surface; a non-rotating swashplate ring positioned around the tilt sleeve, wherein the non-rotating swashplate ring has a first set of pitch control connectors and an anti-rotation connector; a rotating swashplate ring rotatable about the non-rotating swashplate ring, wherein the rotating swashplate ring has a second set of pitch control connectors and a drive link connector; and a first bearing system mounted between the non-rotating swashplate ring and the rotating swashplate ring.

A rotor assembly configured to increase the stiffness of a rotor mast. The rotor assembly includes the rotor mast, a rotor hub, a mast nut, a mast bearing, and a cuff disposed between the mast nut and the mast bearing. The cuff is captured and compressed between the mast nut and the inner race of the mast bearing along an uninterrupted load path that extends between the mast nut and the mast bearing.

A seal system for coaxially aligned shafts includes an input shaft and an output shaft coaxially aligned with the input shaft. The seal system includes a seal adapter support housing coupled to the output shaft and a seal positioned between an end of the input shaft and an end of the seal adapter support housing. The input shaft is configured to rotate at a speed that is different than a speed of the output shaft.
