A survival radio of the type useable in search and rescue operations and carried by the party to be rescued is described. The survival radio includes a GPS receiver, a transceiver and a microcontroller. The microcontroller responds to interrogation messages containing a predetermined identification code for the survival radio to cause a transceiver to transmit a geographic location of the survival radio as derived from GPS signals.

A method for organizing a communication system with automatic handoff. The method includes steps of: (i) sending a message from a first remote unit to a monitoring site during a specific time slot within a frame of time slots, wherein the first remote unit has a unique identification code and the message includes the unique identification code from the first remote unit; (ii) relaying the message including the identification code from the monitoring site to a central authority during a reserved time slot within the frame, the reserved time slot reserved for the relaying step; (iii) transmitting an acknowledgment message from the central authority to the monitoring site, wherein the monitoring site is determined from an updated lookup table of communications links between monitoring sites and remote units, during a time slot reserved for the acknowledgment message; and (iv) retransmitting the acknowledgment message from the monitoring site to the remote unit.

Communication system with automatic handoff

A GPS based search and rescue system utilizes an airborne interrogation unit for extending the range of a second interrogation unit. The airborne unit relays communication between a survival radio and the second interrogation unit. The second interrogation unit is typically a ground based unit and is arranged to provide GPS correction information to the survival radio. The normal line of sight communication between a survival radio and an interrogation unit is extended to an over the horizon communication path by utilizing the airborne interrogation unit as a relay for communications.

An optical target detecting device and system are disclosed wherein a single lens system projects a beam of infra red radiation and a single lens system picks up target reflections of this single radiation. Additional lens systems including reflectors are disclosed along with the single lens system to increase the frequency of received optical radiation from extraneous sources. Frequency discriminating means eliminate the effects of the extraneous radiations while receiving the optical reflections from the desired target.

Spin processing active optical fuze

A coherent optical modulated sensor for use with missiles and the like wherein a series of pulses of optical energy which are intensity modulated by a radio frequency sub-carrier are transmitted to a preselected target having relative motion thereto and wherein returned pulses from the target are received. Phase coherence is effectively maintained by utilizing a single continuously operating local oscillator for down-converting the received detected pulses to a Doppler frequency signal. Target velocity information may be extracted from the Doppler frequency shift induced on the coherent radio frequency sub-carrier of the return pulses. A first channel, or radio frequency sub-carrier channel is provided for receiving the Doppler signal and generating a threshold signal in response to the magnitude of the Doppler signal being equal to or greater than a predetermined magnitude. A second channel (baseband) detects the average direct current power of the received pulse. The average direct current power is compared to the threshold signal for providing a firing control signal when the magnitude of the threshold signal is greater than the magnitude of the detected average current power. The coherent optical modulated sensor may thus be used for detecting preselected targets while discriminating against pulse returns from aerosols.

Subcarrier modulated optical transceiver

In apparatus for discriminating targets from clutter, a high threshold circuit for passing only signals with sufficient amplitude and a lower threshold circuit passing signals of a sufficient amplitude to range extent circuitry, which passes only signals within a predetermined duration and which do not have other range signals adjacent thereto, and to frequency extent circuitry, which passes only signals within a predetermined bandwidth and which do not have other frequency signals adjacent thereto. Signals which satisfy the amplitude, range and frequency requirements then provide an output indicative of a target; all other signals are rejected as clutter.
