In the processing of cathode ray tubes, both the incidence of dark center cathode and residual gas can be reduced by including the step of scanning the mask and screen of the tube with a weak, defocused electron beam, carried out after getter flashing and preferably prior to aging.

A monochrome cathode ray tube incorporates an electron gun featuring a focusing electrode having an upper cup-shaped portion comprising a top cylindrical sidewall portion and a lower inwardly tapering sidewall portion connecting to a flat bottom portion, the cup-shaped portion supported by an elongated cylindrical base portion having a diameter of from about 44 to 48 percent of the diameter of the upper cylindrical portion of the cup. The electron gun is particularly suitable for use in monochrome cathode ray tubes for projection color television.

An improved aging process for a cathode ray tube in which the main focusing grid (G3) is aged at a potential below that of the G2 grid, resulting in significantly reduced incidence of dark center cathode.

CRT mounts for color television are effectively high voltage conditioned by impressing a high voltage DC potential on the mount anode, while at the same time impressing a high frequency pulsed AC potential on the final grid electrode, and allowing the focusing electrode to float electrically, thereby inducing arcing in the upper and lower gaps adjacent the focusing electrode. Preferably, this general conditioning is followed by a second conditioning step in which the focusing electrode is connected to the AC potential, to concentrate the arcing in the upper gap.

A self-adhering base for a cathode ray tube has a circular array of connector pin apertures, three of which are sized to create a force fit with their associated pins. A first high voltage pin aperture is sized smaller than its associated pin, and the remaining two apertures, which are located approximately equidistantly from the first aperture, are slot-shaped. The slots are oriented to have their long axes intersect the first aperture. Such a self-adhering base is useful both as an in-process base during tube manufacture, and also as a permanent base on the finished tube.

A color cathode ray tube incorporates a getter assembly and contactor structure that is introduced into the interior of the tube through the open neck subsequent to the sealing of the panel and funnel portions of the envelope, and a mounting bracket affixed to the internal magnetic shield of the tube for receiving and securely holding the getter assembly and contactor structure, enabling the use of non-bakable getter material in feedback-type tubes.

A connective-protective adapter for use with a silo-type cathode ray tube base provides both connector pin protection and electrical connective means for all active pins of the tube. The invention provides efficient means for dissipating deleterious charge build-up in the glass neck portion of a color cathode ray tube employing an in-line plural beam electron gun assembly. In one embodiment, the invention is comprised of two longitudinal stripes of electrical conductive material oppositely applied on the neck substantially over both narrow sides of the gun assembly. Connective conductors join the stripes to the grounded funnel coating to provide for dissipation of the charge. In another embodiment, the longitudinal stripes are joined by two band-like layers encompassing inter-electrode spacings of the gun assembly.

Apparatus for high voltage conditioning cathode ray tubes having internal electrodes connected to external base pins includes a container having a pair of electrical contact members therein and passing therethrough to a high voltage potential source and to a conditioning potential source with a liquid having a dielectric strength greater than the dielectric strength of air disposed within the container for immersing the base pins therein to effect contact thereof with the electrical contact members of the container. The high voltage conditioning of the cathode ray tube is effected by a process which includes the steps of indexing a cathode ray tube and first container having electrical contact members therein surrounded by a liquid having a dielectric strength greater than the dielectric strength of air to effect immersion of the base pins of the cathode ray tube in the liquid and contact thereof with the contact members of the container and indexing the cathode ray tube and second container containing contact members connected in common to circuit ground to effect arcing to all of the cathode ray tube electrodes in common.

A base for a cathode ray tube includes a rubber washer having apertures of a size to fix over the glass nubbins surrounding the bottom of the tube pins where they exit from the neck of the tube. The base also includes a walled rim which contains the washer.

Means for deterring the build-up of a deleterious negative charge on the neck portion of a cathode ray tube is provided for utilization in especially those tubes wherein the electron gun structure is particularly close to the glass surface of the encompassing neck. The charge inhibiting means is formed of a circumferential band of insulative oxide material having a roughened topography to provide a discontinuous surface condition to break-up the deposition of metallic sublimation resultant from high temperature tube processing and conditioning. The band is oriented substantially in the rearward section of the neck on the portion thereof substantially encompassing the cathode region of the gun structure.
