Apparatus and method are disclosed for making ready a multi-unit, multi-web printing press. Data is entered into a computer memory representing the number of sections of a publication to be printed, the number of pages for each section and which pages of each section are to be printed in one or more colored inks. An acceptable web layout pattern and acceptable page printing plate locations on the various plate cylinders of the press are determined from the inputted and previously stored data. A readout is presented providing information as to the acceptable web layout pattern and the correct page printing plate positions.

Makeready system

A plate lockup mechanism secures a printing plate to a printing cylinder. The mechanism includes two movable members disposed within the printing cylinder. Means connected with one of said members engages one end portion of the printing plate to secure the one end portion of the plate on the cylinder and means connected with the other of said members secures the other end of the plate to the cylinder. Each of the members is movable between first and second extreme positions. A biasing spring coacts between the two members and urges one of the members to either one of its extreme positions when the other member is in its first extreme position and when the other member is in its second extreme position.

Plate lockup mechanism

A mechanism for adjusting the circumferential position of a printing cylinder includes first and second meshing helical gears. The helical gears are supported coaxially of the printing cylinder. A first one of the helical gears is fixed to the printing cylinder to rotate with the cylinder. The other of the helical gears is supported for movement axially relative to the first helical gear to effect a camming action therebetween which rotates the first helical gear and thus rotates the cylinder. However, upon axial adjustment of the cylinder, both of the helical gears move simultaneously axially with the cylinder.
