A method and apparatus for distinguishing voice signals that are played together over the same speaker employs spectral reshaping of one or more of the audio signals. The spectral reshaping shifts modifies the timber of the voice signal while not modifying the pitch of the voice signal. Additional techniques can be used to further distinguish voice signals, such as dynamic gain offset and frequency shifting. After processing one or more signals to spectrally reshape them, they can be played over the same speaker. A user hearing the resulting acoustic signal will be more able to distinguish between the multiple voice signals being played.

Method and apparatus for discriminating between voice signals

A portable radio communication device is provided that receives communications on a primary channel and a secondary channel as part of a dual-watch mode of operation. The portable radio communication device detects a gesture associated with the portable radio communication device and identifies a channel from one of the primary channel and the secondary channel corresponding to the detected gesture. Further, the portable radio communication device associates controls of a user interface in the portable radio communication device to the identified channel for controlling one or more operational parameters pertaining to the identified channel during the dual-watch mode of operation.

Method and apparatus for operating a portable radio communication device in a dual-watch mode

A receiver for a wireless communication device provides a dual path receiver receiving first and second protocol-agnostic, uncorrelated receive signals simultaneously. The dual path receiver generating first and second offset IF signals from the simultaneously received first and second protocol-agnostic, uncorrelated receive signals. The receiver utilizes at least one converter for converting the first and second offset IF signals into at least one serial synchronous interface (SSI) signal representing the spectrum at IF. At least one processor receives the at least one SSI signal and applies parallel processing paths to demodulate the at least one SSI signal into separate baseband signals. The processor provides interference detection of, and level control for, the first and second offset IF signals.

Apparatus and method for a dual watch receiver

A channel scanning technique and apparatus provides audio hole suppression in two-way radio communications. Upon detecting the absence of a carrier signal on a priority channel during a priority scan mode of operation, a training waveform is constructed upon returning to the home-channel. The training waveform is applied to audio shaping filters within an audio lineup to suppress transients and minimize or eliminate the occurrence of audio pops at a speaker output thereby reducing the audio hole.

A method for controlling audio gain balance in a multi-mode communications device () includes providing () microphone audio input to the multimode communications device. The audio is supplied to an amplifier gain stage while a dynamic instantaneous energy value of the audio input is computed () when in a first operational mode such as an analog mode. A predetermined gain algorithm is processed () representing an audio input when in a second mode such as a digital mode using the energy value. The audio gain stage in the multi-mode communications device is then adjusted () so that audio gain when in the first mode substantially approximates an audio gain when in an second mode. A communication device (100) includes an equalizer (126) for correcting imbalance between in-phase and quadrature components of a received signal. The equalizer (126) determines peak amplitude for the in-phase and quadrature components, and the phase imbalance between both components (440). At least one of the in-phase and quadrature components is adjusted based on a function of the phase imbalance, and of the ratio of peak amplitudes of the in-phase and quadrature components (450, 460).
