A glycol- and/or glycerin-based 'universal' aircraft fluid (i.e., usable as any of Type I, II, III, or IV fluids), and having good resistance to degradation of viscosity and other critical properties caused by exposure to heat and/or shear, is disclosed. The fluid may optionally be prepared as a concentrate, and thereafter significantly diluted in the field for diverse uses. The improved performance is achieved by neutralizing a latex of a hydrophobe-containing, polymeric thickener with a base, preferably an alkali metal hydroxide, and preferably in combination with a weak base, such as a salt of a weak acid, and a surfactant which associates with the thickener.

Dispersions of high molecular weight, essentially non-polymerizable vinyl resins in mixtures of radiation curable monofunctional and polyfunctional acrylyl monomers and/or oligomers. The dispersions are useful as coating and ink compositions.

Radiation curable dispersions containing high molecular weight

Tetraethylorthosilicate or tetraethoxyethylorthosilicate is employed as a low-toxicity diluent in radiation curable coating compositions containing acrylyl or methacrylyl functional oligomer. The orthosilicate compound imparts improved leveling and surface characteristics to said coating compositions.

Radiation curable acrylated polyurethane is porduced by (a) producing an isocyanate-terminated intermediate by coreacting an organic diisocyanate with a combination of organic tri/tetraol and organic diol, said combination being chosen from polyester tri/tetraol-polyether diol and polyether tri/tetraol-polyester diol combinations; (b) reacting the isocyanate-terminated intermediate with an hydroxyacrylate such as 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. Unexpectedly, the oligomer has desirably low viscosity, yet cures upon exposure to radiation to a coating having good physical properties.

Coating and ink compositions

Liquid ink or coating compositions that can be cured by thermal treatment or by a combination of ionizing or non-ionizing radiation and a thermal treatment are disclosed. The components are all essentially non-volatile during cure and the compositions have high viscosities making them eminently suitable for printing applications.

The addition of a small amount of acrylic acid to a silica-containing radiation curable coating increases the flatting efficiency of the silica.

The dissolution of certain low molecular weight vinyl resins in radiation curable compositions of one or more polyfunctional polymerizable reactive solvent and, optionally, one or more monofunctional reactive solvent yields compositions having better adhesion to metals than is obtained with the same composition without the vinyl resins and with better stain and abrasion resistance than could be obtained with the vinyl resins alone. The low molecular weight vinyl polymer is preferably a vinyl acetate polymer having an inherent viscosity below about 0.25 and a glass transition temperature from about 25.degree.C. to about 55.degree.C.

Radiation curable compositions of vinyl acetate polymers

The use of certain silane compounds reduces the viscosity and thixotropy of acrylyl coatings compositions thus permitting their more efficient use in conventional coating techniques.

Silane containing coating compositions

Acrylyl-terminated urea-urethane compositions that are the reaction product of an organic polyisocyanate, a hydroxylamine and a hydroxyhydrocarbyl acrylate. These compositions can be used in the preparation of coatings and inks.

Coating compositions are cured by initially treating them for a brief period with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation whereby they are partially cured and then completing the cure by a thermal treatment. This two-step process decreases the amount of volatiles escaping into the atmosphere and it also permits the use of compounds not useful in the past and allows significant improvement in film properties such as adhesion to metal. The initial radiation cure can be with electron beam, ultraviolet mercury lamp, plasma arc or other radiation means; the thermal cure is carried out by any heat means.
