CVD coated cutting tools are provided. A coated cutting tool described herein, in some embodiments, comprises a PcBN substrate and a polished coating adhered to the substrate including one or more layers of AlOdeposited by chemical vapor deposition, wherein the coating has a surface roughness (R) less than about 600 nm in an area of the cutting tool for contacting a workpiece.

CVD coated polycrystalline c-BN cutting tools

In one aspect, cemented carbide bodies are provided. A cemented carbide body described herein, in some embodiments, comprises a tungsten carbide phase, a binder phase comprising at least one metal of the iron group or an alloy thereof, a solid solution phase of carbides of zirconium and niobium (Zr,Nb)C and cubic carbides in an amount ranging from about 0.5 volume percent to about 6 volume percent.

Cemented carbide body and applications thereof

A method of making a coated body wherein the method includes the following sequential steps. First, providing a substrate Second, applying by chemical vapor deposition a titanium carbonitride coating layer that has a thickness equal to between about 0.5 micrometers and about 25 micrometers Third, applying by chemical vapor deposition a first titanium/aluminum-containing coating layer that has a thickness between a greater than zero micrometers and about 5 micrometers. Fourth, applying by chemical vapor deposition an alumina coating layer that has a thickness between greater than zero micrometers and about 5 micrometers. The first titanium-containing coating layer and the alumina coating layer makes up a coating sequence, and the method includes applying a plurality of the coating sequences by CVD.

Method of making a CVD coating scheme including alumina and/or titanium-containing materials

A coated body that includes a substrate and a coating scheme on the substrate. The coating scheme includes a CVD titanium carbonitride coating layer containing titanium carbonitride grains that are of a pre-selected grain size. The coating scheme further includes a first titanium/aluminum-containing coating layer containing first titanium/aluminum-containing grains applied so as to be farther away from the substrate than the titanium carbonitride coating layer. The first titanium/aluminum-containing grains are of a pre-selected grain size. The coating scheme also includes a CVD alumina coating layer containing alumina grains applied so as to be farther away from the substrate than the first titanium/aluminum-containing coating layer. The alumina grains are of a pre-selected grain size.

CVD coating scheme including alumina and/or titanium-containing materials and method of making the same

A coated body that includes a substrate and a coating scheme on the substrate. The coating scheme on the substrate wherein the coating scheme includes an alpha-alumina coating layer that exhibits a platelet grain morphology at the surface of the alpha-alumina coating layer or a kappa-alumina coating layer that exhibits either a lenticular grain morphology or a polyhedra-lenticular grain morphology at the surface thereof or an alpha-kappa-alumina coating layer that exhibits either a large multifaceted grain morphology or a polyhedra-multifaceted grain morphology at the surface thereof.
