Aluminium alloys

A method is described for the manufacture of a sintered ferrous-based material having improved machinability, the method comprises the steps of making a mixture of a ferrous-based powder, the mixture including a compound containing at least one metal from the group comprising manganese and the alkaline-earth series of metals; at least one sulphur donating material; pressing the powder mixture and sintering the pressed mixture so as to cause the formation by reaction during sintering of at least one stable metal sulphide within the sintered material. Materials and articles made by the method are also described.

Method of sintering machinable ferrous-based materials

Sintered materials and a method for their manufacture are described together with products made therefrom, such as piston rings and valve seat inserts for internal combustion engines. The sintered material comprises a porous matrix with a composition lying in the range expressed in wt % of 8 to 12 chromium, 0.5 to 3 molybdenum, up to 1.5 vanadium, 0.2 to 1.5 carbon, other impurities 2 max., up to 1 manganese sulphide, optionally up to 5 molybdenum disulphide, balance iron, the matrix having a uniform dispersion of submicroscopic particles of molybdenum rich carbides which render the material resistant to thermal softening.

Sintered material

Sintered materials and a method are described for the production of ferrous articles, particularly valve seat inserts. The materials are based on A1S1 H11, H12 and H13 materials plus diluent material.

Sintered materials and method thereof

A valve guide and a method for the manufacture thereof are described. The valve guide is a tubular article having a length to outer diameter ratio greater than about 1.5 and is made of a ferrous material by a PM route. The pressed guide is infiltrated by preparing a sheet of the infiltrant alloy, rolling the sheet into a cylinder and inserting it into the guide bore followed preferably by, simultaneous sintering and infiltration.
