Herbicidal compounds

A compound of formula (I): ##STR1## or a salt, enamine or the like, acylate, sulphonate, carbamate or ether derivative thereof; wherein X, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are independently oxygen or sulphur, R.sup.1 is an optionally substituted heterocyclic or cycloalkyl group, and Y is an optionally substituted C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkylene group which is optionally interposed by an oxygen atom, a group ##STR2## a group ##STR3## or an optionally mono-substituted nitrogen atom, wherein p is 0, 1 or 2, s is 0 or 1 and R.sup.b is alkyl or alkoxy; provided that when X, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are oxygen, R.sup.1 is not pyridyl or pyrimidinyl. Processes for the preparation of these compounds and herbicidal compositions containing them are also described and claimed.

A method for inhibiting corrosion of metals in contact with an aqueous solution comprising adding to the system a corrosion inhibiting amount of one or more polytartaric acid compounds having the generalized formula: ##STR1## wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of H and C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, n is less than 4 and the average molecular weight of the mixture corresponds to an average n in the range 1.2 to 3.

Method for inhibiting corrosion of metals using polytartaric acids

Polyether bis-phosphonic acid compounds are disclosed which have the formula (HO).sub.2 OP--R--(OR').sub.n --OR--PO(OH).sub.2 where R is selected from the group consisting of methylene and ethylene, R' is selected from the group consisting of ethylene and ethylene substituted with one or more methyl groups, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, water soluble salts thereof, and esters thereof with alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Also disclosed is a novel preparation of these compounds by reacting hydroxyalkylphosphonic acid dialkyl ester compounds with 2-benzyloxyalkyl organic sulfonates; reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with hydrogen or a hydrogen source; reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with a hydrogen ion acceptor and certain sulfonyl chlorides; and reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with hydroxyalkylphosphonic acid dialkyl ester compounds to form a polyether bis-phosphonic acid compound which may be hydrolyzed to form the polyether bis-phosphonic acid.

A method is disclosed for inhibiting or preventing the formation of scale and corrosion on surfaces in contact with an aqueous system comprising adding to the system an amount effective to inhibit scale formation of a sulfonated organophosphonate compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is an integer from 3 to 10, X is OH or NH.sub.2 ; and water soluble salts thereof.

Polyether bis-phosphonic acid compounds are disclosed which have the formula (HO).sub.2 OP--R--(OR').sub.n --OR--PO(OH).sub.2 where R is selected from the group consisting of methylene and ethylene, R' is selected from the group consisting of ethylene and ethylene substituted with one or more methyl groups, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, water soluble salts thereof, and esters thereof with alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Also disclosed is a novel preparation of certain of these compounds by reacting certain hydroxyalkylphosphonic acid dialkyl ester compounds with certain 2-benzyloxyalkyl organic sulfonates; reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with hydrogen or a hydrogen source; reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with a hydrogen ion acceptor and certain sulfonyl chlorides; and reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with certain hydroxyalkyl-phosphonic acid dialkyl ester compounds to form a polyether bis-phosphonic acid compound which may be hydrolyzed to form the polyether bis-phosphonic acid. Useful intermediates are disclosed which have the formulas ##STR1## HOR'--OR--PO(OR').sub.2, HOR'--OR--PO(OH).sub.2, and X--O.sub.2 S--OR'--OR--PO(OR').sub.2, wherein the above-indicated benzene rings of said formulas are optionally substituted with selected groups, wherein R and R' are as defined above, wherein R' is an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and wherein X is selected from ##STR2## and alkyl groups having from about 1 to 6 carbon atoms.

A method of reclaiming unset cement compositions by mixing a polymethoxy polyphosphonate to the unset composition to cause long-term retardation of cement hydration and subsequently treating the composition with a set accelerator to reinitiate hydration.

Hydration retarder

A composition and method for inhibiting corrosion of ferrous metals in contact with an aqueous solution comprising adding to the system from 0.1 to 500 ppm of an aminohydroxysuccinic acid compound selected from group consisting of compounds of the generalized formulas: ##STR1## wherein R is H or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, optionally substituted with --OH, --CO.sub.2 H, --SO.sub.3 H or phenyl, C.sub.4 C.sub.7 cycloalkyl, or phenyl which is optionally substituted with --OH, or --CO.sub.2 H, and R' is H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, optionally substituted with --OH or CO.sub.2 H; and ##STR2## wherein R' is as above, and Z is selected from the group consisting of i) --(CH.sub.2).sub.n -- wherein n is an integer from 2 to 10, ii) --(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --X--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 -- wherein X is --O--, --S--, --NR'--; wherein R' is selected from the group consisting of H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyallkyl, acyl, --C(O)OR'' wherein R'' is C.sub.1 C.sub.6 alkyl or benzyl and ##STR3## wherein R' is as above, ##STR4## wherein Y is H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, --CO.sub.2 H, or --SO.sub.3 H, m is independently 0 or 1 and p is 1 or 2, and ##STR5## wherein R.sub.a and R.sub.b are independently H or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl, Q is H or C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl and S is 0, 1 or 2; t is independently 0, 1, 2 or 3 and q is 0, 1, 2, or 3, and r is 1 or 2; or water soluble salts thereof.

Corrosion inhibitors

An improved process for the production of allylphosphonic acid dialkyl esters in high yield and selectivity by the gradual addition of trialkyl phosphite to react with the appropriate allyl halide in the presence of a divalent nickel catalyst and, optionally, a polymerization inhibiting compound, e.g. hydroquinone.

Preparation of dialkyl allylphosphonic acid diesters

A novel process for rearranging triallyl phosphite to diallyl allylphosphonate ester is disclosed. The process involves heating triallyl phosphite in the presence of a soluble, inorganic bromide or iodide catalyst. The rearrangement process is useful in a 3-step process for the preparation allylphosphonic acid from trialkyl phosphite without the isolation of intermediates.
