A gland member within a medical valve is configured to have a substantially consistent or enlarging internal volume as the valve transitions from a closed mode to an open mode. The valve has a housing forming an interior containing a flow path, and a stationary post member within the interior. The post member has a lumen that is a part of the flow path. The lumen has an opening to the interior of the housing. The valve further includes a gland member circumscribing the post member to produce a variable volume region formed at least in part between the gland member itself and the post member. The variable volume region is a part of the flow path, while the gland member occludes the post lumen opening when in the closed mode. The variable volume region has an open volume that is no less than its closed volume.

Anti-drawback medical valve

A medical valve includes a housing having an interior forming an inlet and an outlet. A longitudinally movable member is secured within the interior of the housing. External to the movable member and within the interior is a fluid path. Movement of the movable member controls fluid flow between the inlet and the outlet via the fluid path. The outlet produces no greater than a negligible drawback or positive push during withdrawal of a nozzle.

A medication inhaler comprising an inhaler body, having a medication container chamber for receiving a medication container and an air passage coupling the medication container chamber with exterior air, and a mouthpiece axially engageable with the inhaler body. The mouthpiece has a mouthpiece chamber and a medication delivery needle communicating with the mouthpiece chamber. The needle extends toward the medication container chamber and has an opening for supplying exterior air and medication from an interior cavity of the medication container, accommodated within the medication container chamber, through the needle and to mouthpiece chamber. In the first position, the mouthpiece engages with the inhaler body with such that the needle is spaced from the medication container, and, in the second position, the needle axially traverses the medication container so that the opening in the needle communicates with the air passage and the interior cavity of the medication container to deliver the medication to the patient. The medication inhaler also includes an air bypass which bypasses the needle and supplies supplemental exterior air to the mouthpiece chamber to increase airflow through the medication inhaler.

A medication inhaler for concurrently delivering multiple doses of medications including an inhaler body having a medication container chamber for receiving a plurality of medication containers and at least one air passage connecting the medication container chamber with external air, a mouthpiece axially engageable with the inhaler body and having a mouthpiece chamber for communication with a patient's respiratory system, and a hollow medication delivery needle communicating with the mouthpiece chamber. A medication delivery needle penetrates the medication containers when the inhaler is actuated and has at least one opening for passing exterior air and medication from interior spaces of the medication containers and through the needle to mouthpiece.

Medication inhaler for dispensing multiple capsules

A medication inhaler having an inhaler body with a medication container chamber for receiving a medication container and at least one air passage connecting the medication container chamber with external air and a mouthpiece axially engageable with the inhaler body and having a mouthpiece chamber for communication with a patient's respiratory system and a hollow medication delivery needle communicating with the mouthpiece chamber. The medication delivery needle extends toward the medication container chamber and has at least one opening for passing exterior air and medication from an interior space of a medication container in the medication container chamber through the needle and to mouthpiece chamber. The mouthpiece engages with the inhaler body in a first position wherein the needle extends into the medication container chamber short of the medication container in the medication container chamber and in a second position wherein the needle axially traverses the medication container so that the at least one opening in the needle communicates with the at least one air passage and the interior space of the medication container in the medication container chamber.

A normally closed valve that may be opened upon insertion of a nozzle permits two-way flow when opened by a luer-taper nozzle. The valve also is able to resist large back pressures. The valve includes a substantially rigid housing that defines a passageway having an inlet section and an outlet section. The housing has an exterior inlet face to which the inlet section opens. The inlet section preferably has tapered and expanding zones. The tapered zone is adjacent to the exterior inlet face and is shaped to receive the nozzle. The expanding zone is adjacent to the tapered zone and has a larger inner diameter than the tapered zone's inner diameter. The exterior of the inlet section of the housing may have threads to accept luer-lock threads that may surround the nozzle.

Luer-activated valve

A medical valve has an interior flow path having a volume that is substantially the same when in either the closed mode (when the valve is closed) or the open mode (when the valve is open). To those ends, the medical valve has a housing forming an interior, and a valve mechanism (within the interior) having a substantially rigid translating member with a bore. The interior of the housing has a flow path that includes at least a portion of the bore of the translating member. As noted above, the open mode volume is substantially equal to the closed mode volume.

Swabbable luer-activated valve

A medical valve has a translating member that enlarges the volume of the interior of the valve when the valve is in an open mode (permitting fluid flow), and decreases the volume of the interior when the valve is in a closed mode (preventing fluid flow). This varying volume should substantially eliminate drawback into the valve. To that end, the valve includes a housing having an inlet and an outlet, and a fluid channel extending between the inlet and the outlet. The fluid channel includes a variable volume region. The valve further includes the above noted translating member, which is secured to the housing and at least partly bounds the variable volume region. The translating member has at least a portion that moves distally when the valve transitions from the closed mode to the open mode. The distal movement of the translating member enlarges the volume on the variable volume region.

A medical valve for valving fluid includes a housing defining a chamber having an inlet, an outlet, and an interior wall, a compressible member within the chamber, and a fluid channel defined by the interior wall. The fluid channel directs fluid received from the inlet toward the outlet.

Apparatus for reducing fluid drawback through a medical valve

A medical valve has an open mode that permits fluid flow, and a closed mode that prevents fluid flow. Among other things, the medical valve includes a housing forming an interior having a fluid chamber, and a valve mechanism within the interior. The valve mechanism has a movable member that includes a needle (e.g., a hypetube). The needle may extend into the fluid chamber when the valve is in the open mode.
