A carton for packaging a series of rolls of web material includes parallel, opposite side walls and angled, corner walls provided at opposite corners of the carton. The rolls are positioned within the carton such that the material of the roll adjacent each corner wall engages the corner wall. Top and bottom end flaps extend from each of the side walls, for enclosing the top and bottom ends of the carton. Cut-out retainer flaps are formed in two of the top end flaps, for engagement within an internal passage defined by the core of the roll of material therebelow to retain the rolls of material in position within the interior of the carton.

A tray-type package for receiving a series of articles is constructed from a blank which enables the user to vary the size of the horizontal surface on which the articles are placed. The blank includes a bottom panel and a series of side walls which are interconnected with the bottom panel via connection structure which defines a series of fold locations, and the user selects the appropriate fold location according to the size of articles being packaged such that, when a predetermined number of articles are placed on the tray, the outer articles are in close proximity to, or engage, the tray side walls. When the tray side walls are folded at the different fold positions, the position of the adjacent side wall ends varies, and retainer structure is interposed between the side wall ends which accommodates such variation and which secures the side walls together. The retainer structure is an extension section formed on one of the side walls which overlaps the other side wall. The extension section includes tab structure receivable within one of a series of slots formed in the other side wall, for interconnecting the side walls.

Tray construction and method of constructing

A corrugated container and the method of forming the container saves paper. The method of forming the container includes gluing backing webs of paper to each side of a corrugated web, resulting in a composite web of three layer thickness. One of the backing layers is wider than the other backing layers, defining single layer strips on each edge of the multiple layer central section. Longitudinal fold lines are placed in the multiple and single layer strips. The composite web is sheared into sheets, with the sheet being folded along the fold lines into a container. The fold lines are placed to position the single layer portions on the upper sidewalls and top of the container, where less strength is required.
