Configuring of a communications environment is facilitated. A mapping tool is provided that aids in the configuring of various components of a communications environment, such as an input/output (I/O) subsystem of the environment. Data generated from an order process and a logical configuration definition are used as input to the mapping tool. The tool performs mapping and generates as output a physical configuration definition, and optionally, one or more reports. The mapping tool has a manual function, as well as an automatic function.

An input/output subsystem is configured as a plurality of input/output subsystem images, each of which appears to a program as an independent input/output subsystem. An input/output subsystem image is identified by an input/output subsystem image identifier, which is used by various programs to designate the particular input/output subsystem image for which an I/O operation is to be performed. An input/output subsystem image includes, for instance, one or more input/output paths. An input/output path of an input/output subsystem image is identified by an input/output path identifier, as well as a physical input/output path identifier.

The copy of the hardware token may be fetched from the HSA and compared to hardware token of the configuration definition used to establish the software configuration definition in the main storage to determine that the software and hardware configuration definitions are synchronized. If the software and hardware configuration definitions are synchronized, dynamic changes may be made to the hardware configuration definition in the HSA. A program parameter is provided to store recovery information such that if a failure occurs during a dynamic change, the previous hardware I/O configuration may be recovered or subsequent changes can be made from the point of failure.
